I never noticed the t-slot until you mentioned it. About 50 years ago I heard this, and it’s still true:

There is nothing that can’t be broken, and that includes steel ball bearings loose in a sandbox, using nothing but a rubber mallet.

The interesting thing about Boxford lathes is that they are pretty much a clone of a South Bend. Not sure if a compound from a 9" SB would swap right over. Might need the base plate as well, although the dials are definitely different!

I'm thinking still enough left on that T slot to hold a tool holder the way it is but my biggest concern would be, considering how many completely neophyte students used that thing, and how many other jam ups happened with similar shock incidents that broke that T Slot.
