I was thinking how every once in a while a quick solution turns out to be the correct solution and thought others might have had similar experiences.

Mine is my system for most used tools. They always sit in toolboxes because they’re constantly being shuttled between the cottage and the house. So I temporarily set up drawers in the workbench- one for the top trays and one for the boxes themselves:

This actually works fantastic. I take tools out and throw them back onto the shelves. When the pile gets big enough or I’m sick of digging through the pile I put them back into the toolboxes. Until I no longer have a need for gathering up my most uses tools to take out of the workshop, then I think I’ll stick with this system.

I have the same basic system for shuttling between the house, the shop, machinery in the field, emergency repairs wherever, and all my 4 kids places.

I mostly use big cordura tool bags. But I also have a few dedicated totes for certain farm implements. The contents of the totes don't really change much. The generally hold all the pins, clips, tools, and common repair parts for whatever farm activity I'm doing - plowing, planting, ditching, cultivating, spraying, etc etc.

The contents of most of the big cordura tool bags get rearranged all the time. They generally just sit on the floor or a bottom shelf, not in a drawer. Damn handy way to do it. Two of them are sort of dedicated to travel trips and rescue trips. But even then the contents change based on the mission.

I like that way of doing things. It works well for me. Lord help anyone who figures they can just grab one and go like me though. I'm a professional custom piler. Nothing would make sense to anyone else.

I find that having a full rolling tool box in every building works well. The trick is not to let the tools migrate from building to building or you end up with no tools in one building.
