Board game talk

Carcassonne is a favorite over here

Ticket to ride is another one that gets a fair bit of play, but better with 4 people

Catan in my experience is a bit tough to play casually, everyone has to figure out all the rules again, it sits in the box

We try to get to tether with a couple of friends at least once a week.
Mostly card games, but our Favorit is a Canadian card game called Wizard. It is a really fun trick based game. It can get a little cut throat.

I started playing Bridge when I was young, play the odds, develop a winning strategy figure out who has what. Kids don’t seem to play cards as much these days. But my kids do like board games on the weekend, it’s nice they want to do things beyond screen time.

My wife and daughter both play chess. I'm guessing you would not enjoy playing against either;-)

I do, but not enough people do, and women only make up 13% of people that play chess....so if you are going to use chess as a household game you have a problem

Edit; Sorry, i misread you post, i read it as you probably wouldn't enjoy playing chess, i do, as for playing against your wife and daughter, probably not, i haven't played chess in 20 years.

i will add, according to chess.com, only 15% of the population in the us play chess (either weekly, monthly or during the past year), and if only approximately 13% of 15% of those are women, and given the average household is 50% women....add to that it is only a 2 player game, it should be easy to see why it wouldn't be that popular

Had some running around today so I stoped by a few of my usual thrift/2nd hand stores and found this one. I had to laugh as it was sitting next to RISK, but it was missing a bunch of pieces so I didn't buy it too.

It was only $6, so cheap enough to try it.

Nice find! Hope this one has all the pieces because like I mentioned it is designed with thin margins of success. You distribute the Infection Cards "evenly" through the Draw Deck (each one randomly into five different piles, then stack together). Missing cards in the deck would increase the odds dramatically against players' favour. It is also a one-time play through with linear progression (story, events) where you permanently "discard" some cards. I hope the didn't actually rip them up and throw 'em away.

Same folks made Rising Tide didn’t they?

This one is brand new with everything still in the wrappers inside. I have not gone through the items list, but it looks complete at a quick glance. I Just looked at what I wrote above, and could have swore I wrote that, but guess I didn't. Losing it today.....lol. I have only done a quick skim online regarding gameplay, and will dive into it a bit more when we get a chance to play. sounds interesting, abeit a bit involved. Should be a fun one with her friend group, although it could turn bad, just like watching medical shows where they point out all the inaccuracies all episode long......"that tubes not taped right, it's barely even IN", "that's not a shockable rhythm at ALL".....D

I've never played Rising Tide but they make a few known ones like Carcassanne and Love Letter, which my other head-to-head competitive group likes to play. I played original pandemic like 8+ years ago, but only remember the mechanics only because we've been playing Season 0 now. Since this group gathers monthly, we tried to align it with in game monthly schedule but failed since like mentioned we're all too busy. We just had our first failure for "October" and will have to replay it again this month.

I also played Wingspan years ago with my partner and I enjoyed it. She's not a boardgame player but picked this one out (admirer of wildlife) through a free rental from a local boardgame cafe.

The setup is involved and we can only get through one-month a meet-up (we take forever, calculating all the moves, but as a result do pretty well). Having said that, we were really, really tired of the set up in Gloomhaven so we dropped it and starting playing Pandemic instead. This is a breeze in comparison and it's fast once you get into the rhythm for each month. Despite it being a highly rated game, I do not recommend Gloomhaven to anyone unless they are childless with no other hobbies or friends...

Although I've never played them, our littluns enjoy murder mystery board games. They'll also hit some of the local Escape Rooms.

My friends and I have done a bunch of them in different cities, from Boston to Montreal and GTA here. Escape Games Canada up in North York is one of the best. Ignoring scale, they make Disney Theme Parks look amateurish at times. We were trying their stuff from day 1 but founders/designers (friend's, cousin's friend) have since sold the business and their design/technology to other companies so there's no longer "new" stuff, just reskinning the same rooms.
