Belt Sander - Which belts to get?

Not intending to further derail Craig's thread but having never seen the Viel sander I always thought it looked a bit wimpy but clearly it's up to scratch.

Fun facts about the Viel S5: invented by a Quebec high school shop teacher. Had it manufactured; sold so well that he retired early from teaching : ) I think that was in the late 1950's. Visit vieltools dot com to see all the available jigs and accessories.

Whenever one appears on Vancouver Craigslist it's usually gone within a few hours.

What are you grinding on it?

I use it to deburr edges and relieve corners off stuff coming off the lathe, mill and bandsaw. I never thought to try grinding HSS tools with it as the motor is only 1750 RPM. Might give it a try though.

If you do use it to grind HSS you'll want a coarser belt for shaping.
Like 60 gr to shape and 120 gr to finish.
I'm partial to ceramic belts as they seem to last longer than aluminum oxide.

I will definitely be getting one of these. $130 from LV vs $140 + $15 shipping from the mfg. Will definitely support my local LV

Did you get one? Kind of crude in my books, but seems to work ok for what I use it for.
