Bead roller project

I'm working on making a bead roller so I can make a splash apron for my old truck, now I need to make some gears and i am making them

2 inch contact point

The bead roller has to beable to roll 18gauge sheet. and I have a gear hob that I made from W1 tool steel. The bead roller only spins at about 10-20 rpm but could have some good toque in it as it has to bend some sheet steel.

Can I make the gears out of cast iron and have them last a long time (not break a tooth) or would you think steel would be better?

Hi jyman myself personally I would build them out of steel over cast cause they are going to be smaller gears and your not quite sure what the torque is going to be which is going to be pretty high if the gears are going straight setup to the bead roller shafts. How are you turning it by hand or an electric motor? If your turning it by hand you may be ab,e to get away with cast gears cause you can tel if your adding more torque with your arm. If you want it to last I'd go steel.

just have your two main gears engaged for 1 to 1 ratio on the lower shaft put a larger gear driven by a smaller gear. I was thinking about using a Chev timing chain giving you the advantage.
