Anyone try Wamo / self-driving yet?

My daughter’s job has her bouncing back and forth Mississauga - San Fransisco - Basel. This week she was in S.F. and tried Waymo for the first time, apparently “Weird, but very cool”

Survived the drive, so she is now on her way to Bali to unwind for a week. I’m starting to feel old. At least when we get too old to drive we won’t need to;-)

Where's Letterman and his "Stupid Car Tricks" segment when we really need it? Very cool, and completely idiotic. Think about how much fuel it takes to pull those stunts - there certainly isn't any room for passengers (maybe even for a driver) in there in order to be able to do 30 seconds worth of that stuff.

None of this is going to keep BYD et.al. from eating Tesla's lunch. The Chinese are thinking about business while Musk thinks about what he wants to drive on his Martian highways - first the farcical Cybertruck, then this. It takes a very dysfunctional company to allow its resources to be poured into childish visions rather than what the marketplace wants or needs.

Or another view, more than 200 billion gallons of gas not used because of the Tesla's and the other EV's that came to fruition because of Tesla.

AND

The thrusters use compressed air not fuel.

I think we owe him a stunt or two.

I think they said the thrusters use nitrogen.
I'm guessing it's a concept car and nothing like it will ever hit the streets in any number

@slow-poke You're misreading me slightly. I'm not carping about "hydrocarbon waste" or anything like that, just pointing out how much fuel (of any sort) it takes to do stunts like this, and its effect on the (I hesitate to use the word) usefulness of the car in terms of contained volume. I strongly doubt that compressed air would be used; when I've needed a portable pressure source I've used CO2. Note too the claim of the use of vacuum.

Sure. But how long has it been now since they introduced a new consumer model into the market - other than the Cybertruck, which has completely bombed? We can launch a debate on consumerism and whether their existing passenger car offerings "should be enough" to satisfy the market, but historically that's not how the car business has worked - you either bring something new to the buying public every year or die. So they're just continuing to ignore that requirement for continued commercial viability in favour of Musk's latest wacky idea.

Depends if you are speaking of European or American auto makers. The big three would spend a billion every two to three years on a facelift - new grill and dash. Europe would run fewer models for 7-10 years. Concentration of force.

If I was starting an auto company, I think I'd view the historical approach of NA makers as a good hint as to what not to do.

Except EV's destroy the environment and exploit child labour so....

Just like wind turbines can't be recycled, they just get buried and dozed over

Before you call hogwash, there's been a few studies showing how transporting the individual car pieces by ship burns more ship fuel than the car will save on car fuel 🙄
