You boom-boom guys, this product was recommended on a model engineering forum to prevent scaling on delicate parts when heat treated. I have ordered from Brownell's before but its a $ PITA. Is this available in Canada under a different name or maybe its re-packaged something-or-other chemical?

Not only US$25 a pound, but like many things at Brownells, "Out of Stock."

I believe that Chris (Clickspring) uses a Boric Acid paste when heat treating (Gunsmith Kinks II also references this, along with “PBC Compound”, which is also costly), and Guy Lautard recommends coating small tools with softened bar soap (and an overnight soak in salt & vinegar – didn't I refer to this recently?) to avoid scaling.

damn I saw a paste somewhere on a youtube video that was supposed to be fantastic. I remember thinking damn and I have so much stainless foil what a waste. But I can't recall the video or the product any longer.

If you wrap in foil, include a few bits of wood to consume the oxygen. Same effect as the other concoctions.
