Active project - 1972 MGB

Got the engine timed correctly today.
Used a couple of lengths of aluminum dryer vent to get the exhaust out of the garage.
Sorta worked till I discovered that the exhaust was barely connected after the resonator.
Decided to pull everything after the downpipe. The muffler is a vintage Ansa so I'd like to keep that.
Need to figure out if I can make it work.

If you go to KMS, they should have or be able to get j or u tube. A little new pipe, a few slices out of the bends and some quality time with your tig welder. If you want things to break down fairly easily for ease of transmission removals etc, consider adding a bolt through flange or two......

That's a good idea Don. I was rushed this afternoon so I wasn't able to take the time to figure out where and why it was out of place. Tomorrow is another day.

The most important thing I have learned about hanging exhaust is making sure it all hangs freely and isn't under tension trying to pull it into place.
You're going to get your exercise tomorrow climbing back and forth from under the car. Might want to carb up tonight. 😛

After some thrashing and gnashing the exhaust is 95% back on.
I discovered that the inlet on the muffler was axially oriented toward the rear suspension where it was rubbing.
So I cut the inlet off and rotated it about 15 degrees and welded it back on.
Redid the intermediate hanger using a factory hanger and everything lined up pretty well.
No pics yet as I was absolutely filthy from crawling around under the car.

Shipping to the freight forwarder in Blaine WA was $325, to my house was $700
If you go alone you're tickling $275-$300 in travel costs by the time you get back plus it's a full day away from working on the car. Then there's crossing the border unscathed.

Just thought I'd be a ray of sunshine in your day. lol

Update time
The car is now running beautifully.
I think part of the issue was the the old fuel pump was putting out so much fuel that it caused the engine to carbon up. And sitting for four years did not help.
Today I pulled the air cleaners, warmed it up till it ran without choke and verified the timing. Once it hit normal temperature. I ran it up to 4000 rpm several times, each time there was black smoke. Then the smoke stopped. So I think there was a large amount of carbon burning off producing the smoke. After the smoke stopped it ran very smoothly.
Lifting the slides at idle caused the rpm to rise ever so slightly and then fall. So I think the mixture screws are pretty much spot on.
