A new take on the present state of AI

The caveat here is that as a rule I'm a late adopter who stays as far out on the trailing edge as possible, in just about everything I do. I ignore most new music that comes out, my theory being that it's probably just faddish bullshit, and if it turns out to have real staying power I'll catch up on it soon enough, usually within a few years. That's served me very well for decades. And I believe that buying almost anything new demonstrates moral failure when there's so much stuff available used, cheap, free. Besides, I'm usually broke, and sticking to that rule lets me - eventually - get the stuff I need. Eventually, everything comes to the patient bottom-feeder.

And so it is with AI. Sure, I understand the valid - and even important - use cases. But those are (volumetrically speaking) pretty tiny compared to the world of slop we suddenly find ourselves living in. So I'm going to keep my feet up for a while and see where it goes. I learned today of an interesting use case in reverse-engineering that may change my mind, but I'm waiting for details.

Here's an excellent interview with Roger McNamee, who was an early facebook investor who turned into one of its harshest critics - his book "Zucked" is a worthy read. Here's his take on what's going on in AI at the moment.

I follow the AI news here and there.

There has been a lot of "interesting" statements coming from the people who have a great deal of power and influence.

It is sometimes very disheartening to hear and see what some sources claim regarding the future of AI, billionaires building survival bunkers, cryptic "end of times" statements by world leaders, etc.

But as always, regardless of what is potentially on the horizon, each day is precious and I try not to waste it worrying too much about things mostly beyond my control.

The scare tactics are real.

Modern human society is now a friable complex system.

It's been heaped with multiple traumas over the past two decades, and over the last 6 years in particular.

We dont need AI to bring it all down.

Once ill timed fart at the UN and we're done for. IMO

I listened to a couple radio shows about this, this week. They said one of the scariest problems with AI is the lack of morals. AI could be asked if they knew the rules, AI could acknowledge affirmative, then go ahead break the rules anyway.

Then as mentioned the crux of the problem with the USA slowing advancement, it allows other countries to gain a lead

The Pandora's box is if a crime is committed, how to you "arrest" AI
