3-ton Dake press $400 Victoria

Unfortunately it jams up.
I have seen a nifty gear repair where a fellow drilled and tapped a line of holes and then loctited in a line of cap screws and then filed the heads to match the gear profile.
I don't know if the ram is cast or bar stock. If it's bar stock I may be able to lay down a MIG bead and then profile that.
Typically bar stock and heat treated. Aside from repair, you can likely source a replacement from Dake.

It's Dan's fault, he made you buy it.

Sounds like justification for a shaper. :D
I was just going to write that now he NEEDS a shaper to fix that ram :)

I'd have a crack at repairing that. Clean, Preheat, build up with tig weld and appropriate filler, post heat and cool slowly, then recut the teeth. Not sure what steel dake uses for the ram, but I'd guess some 40 series with a mid 30-40s hardness?

Edit: sorry the deal got soured David.

Likely yes :(
Not too interject in your post sir, but even if Dake did charge you $400 for a new ram I would still think you were on the winning side for your purchase considering they list for $1500usd before shipping. An apprentice at my old shop did the same thing by using a snipe on the ratchet lever .

Btw, I was number 2 in line for that arbour press lolz

Thanks Dan, I think I can fashion a decent repair. I'm going to have a go at running some TIG beads in there to build up a new tooth profile.
Now if only I had a shaper :D

If you have the right gear cutter, it might be better to just make a new Ram out of steel. It would be a fun project that would keep you busy for a few days..... I hope...

I've thought about this but the challenge is clearance.
Because I have a vertical spindle I can't figure out how to cut more than about 5" down from either end of the rack.

Spoke to Dake. A new ram is actually not outrageous. $149 USD + shipping.
That’s a lot less expensive than I would have thought. Also suggests they sell enough of them due to breakage to have advantage of scale in manufacturing and keeping some on the shelf.

That's a problem. I don't like those right angle spindle adapters.

Can you spell S H A P E R?

Ya, you need a shaper.......

Help me out here guys! He badly needs a shaper right!

See @Dan Dubeau, you are a fortune teller extraordinair!
