2002 VW Golf refurb

Im also remembering the "thoughtful" little German engineering features of these cars....little plastic tabs, torx screws, triple square socket head bolts, etc. The plastic tabs and covers were probably OK in 2007 until about 2012 or so but in 2025 they are not so fun and pliable.
And one of the most thoughtful designs ...
A place for the ever needed code scanner. (Too bad mine wont read most VW codes) :( View attachment 66162
I have an OBD11 reader on the way

buy crap, when it dies buy another one. Buy a whole slew of $250 cars with the intent of fixing them, three or four at a time, then slowly scrap them one at a time. SWMBO won’t let me do that anymore, sigh.

I wouldn't know a damned thing about that. Oddly enough, my better half has been blowing off a little steam lately on the same subject.......... Or at least from what I can gather, that is what the jest of it was about.;)

I’ve owned a lot of cars, last count was 42. For my massive 5”10”, 140 lbs frame a Miata fits like a glove. Most fun car I’ve ever owned. Handles great, short throw shift lever feels more like a toggle switch than a gear shift. More than enough ooomph to put a grin on the drivers face.
Always way more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
Not that Miatas are slow.

Yup. I was looking at the VCDS but the interface was just brutal and this was well reviewed on various forums.

As a VCDS user I hope you share some of your experience with OBD11. I bought into VCDS when it was the only show in town. At my latest decision point I traded in my old VCDS for the newest one because I felt I was “invested” enough at that point.

I’d be interested to hear about using their “credits” system.

D

P.S. Miatas don’t agree with me, I come in at 6’-4”, with the top down I have a good view of the top of the windshield frame. :D

I definitely will!
I have a check engine light and ABS light on so I need to figure out what these are about.

First thing to look at for the ABS code is a broken wire on the speed sensor. Good question on the engine.

I don’t know about OBD11 but if their forum is anywhere as good as Ross Tech’s then you should be able to mine for decipherization of the fault codes and fixes.

I presume there is a speed sensor on each wheel.

What are your plans for your Dub?
Extra family vehicle...I've got two teenage kids learning how to drive. I wish I could have gotten something newer but can't justify the cash for anything decent. I'm hoping I can keep this thing road worthy for a few years but the electronics and computer controlled engine and transmission has me worried.

From what I understand the Mk4 auto transmissions were troublesome but the next gen, Mk5 the problem was sorted. I had a Mk5 Jetta TDI that I loved with a capital L. Chipped it and the thing was a rocket ship.
