A bit of surface rust? Project lathe, good luck on finding parts but might be a diamond in the rough.

No its not, Its called character!

Its maybe chewed up - I mean it is certainly not new. One would need to inspect this to figure it out. Still for a 1000 this is a good deal unless the bed was really super extra worn out - we are talking here at say more than 20 thou - i.e. 0.5 mm.
 
Take a look at the closest way in the last photo, that looks more like 5mm!

Look closer - look at opposing ways - it seems someone cut a round shaped hole in the inner ways for whatever reason. What you are thus seeing is optical illusion.

It could be also that the gap has smaller ways then the "regular ways" or simply someone "modified" the lathe for whatever strange reason.

At least it has... the gap!
