  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

10th Annual Rust Junkie Fest

Darrin
It’s back again this year.

Just south of Ottawa Ontario
13th July, 2024

While it started out as a collection of woodworkers meeting up to swap tools, it has developed into a very divers meet up of makers. There is even a resident blacksmith (Old Soldier Toolworks). The Last couple of years there has been a Hand Scraping demo, a VFD set up demo, and even a furnace casting demo.
This year, I will be setting up tent and doing a demo (my first ever), showing how to make a pen from a kit.

Heres a link to the info page and registration. While the event is free, registration lets them know how many people they need food for the dinner. The bbq is running all day with burgers and sausage for only a couple of bucks. But there is a FREE dinner at 5pm, to mark the end of the event.

Hope to see some of you guys there.

Hey, I was there, saw your display and watched you do your thing for a while, cool stuff! Congrats on the demo. I don't think we actually talked but I'm sure you remember me, I was the sweaty middle aged slightly overweight bearded white guy. :)

I was surprised how many demonstrators I either already knew or have worked with, or have friends in common with this year. What a small world!

This was only my 2nd year at rust fest but I'm not missing another if I can help it.

Glad you came out Jeff. I have to admit, the faces were becoming a blur. There was at least one other member, @slow-poke , there in the morning.
This was my first try, at something like this, and I didn't really know what to expect. So I was a little bit all over the place, just answering the questions that were coming at me. I was surprised at how many people were interested, but thought it was to difficult to start out with. There were also a bunch who have already made pens, so the questions bounced from one end of the spectrum to the other.
I will definitely do it again next year. I already have an idea of what I’ll do and how I’ll run it.
I hope you do come out, and definitely jump in and say hi.

Hi Darren,
Thanks for posting and letting us know about this event, it was my first time and I really enjoyed it.
I missed the beginning of your presentation, I was attending the host, Jack Forsberg woodworking shop tour, which was really entertaining and informative. After I walk out of is shop and saw the blacksmiths at work, I was mesmerized watching them making a medieval helmet and another making a measuring caliper. Those guys were hard working troopers demonstrating there craft and skills in such extreme hot weather. Then I walk around the wadkin temple and joined your pen turning presentation. I was really impressed with you presentation and your level of craftsmanship. You mentioned in the above post " I was a bit all over the place " not really, your presentation was very well done, I have learn lots from the hour I spent watching your presentation. I now realize all the step needed to make a pen from scratch and of this quality. In the end there a piece of art, a collector item. Well done!

I am super looking forward to the next Rust Junk Fest

Cheers!

It was fun as always but a little.tamer than past years with 2 blacksmiths missing from the usual lineup. Nick Verbree (Old Soldier Tool Works. I met him when he took my sand casting class a few years ago. His father was the one demonstrating hand scraping 2 years ago, mentioned above) whose shop is on site is recovering from a surgery, and Jacques Gallant from Montreal has too much work piled up. Jacques and I are noodling around with an idea to do an iron pour demo at next year's event. Josh Koss from Metcalfe ON was there forging spear points. He's the guy who built the 2 man crucible tongs and pouring shank for my sculptor friend David's A25 crucible.

The host Jack Forsberg has built some incredibly beautiful shop buildings at the "Wadkin Temple" to house the real stars of the event - his collection of beyond restored old English patternmaker's machines. Jack is also restoring the multistorey mechanism at Watson's Mill from the 1800's in Manotick ON which is truly amazing to see. He also sells VFD's to run 3 phase machines with his business partner Matt from Oshawa (Matt goes by OMM on YouTube)

26" Wadkin jointer/planer. It might look like a woodworking machine, but it was designed for patternmakers like many of Jack's machines. So technically...

Disc Sander takes 45 minutes to spin down. The loose items on the table never moved even a little.

I didn't make it past the first swap meet table without having to go straight back to my van with a really nice baseball bat looking propane burner kit. I'm sure the regulator alone would have been a bargain at that price :)

Why am I seeing this now? I was bumming around the house with nothing really to do and could have made it out. At the very least would have been a nice drive. Oh well, next year I can try to make it.
