Just in case I need to make the one I have larger one day.

Help me make my lathe better

@whydontu that plate isn’t even as much as others I came across. I don’t mind spending the money to get a quality outcome. I hope to have this lathe for good. @fixerup that’s a great source too! Will they deliver to Canada? I’m not too far from the boarder either, but I’d have to empty the...

Help me make my lathe better

@trlvn bell mouth is perfectly what it is. I thought about a self made grinding set up, figured it would be a stop gap measure, so I though getting new(er) chuck would be better in long run @Susquatch i thought about trying to shim parts true but there no way I’d have the patience for that for...

Help me make my lathe better

I think the issue is definitely mostly in the jaws. I checked the chuck body at the rear (only spot that is continuous) and only get 2 thou run out. But in the jaws is almost 20! Jaws are also uneven, #2 I can jam a .008 feeler in over 1/2 inch! I am assuming the threaded section is...

Help me make my lathe better

Here’s a pic of when I was replacing the spindle bearings, the threaded ring is not fixed. Threads onto the chucks to hold it into the taper. Here is the back of the 4 jaw, and the piece the old owner made. It doesn’t have the relief in the Center but measured the same. Was hoping to be able...

Help me make my lathe better

My old McDougall lathe has an old school thread on chucks. With a floating threaded collar to hold it to the tapered spindle with a key. The chuck has a lot of run out, and the jaws are worn, not straight. I’d like to fit a new chuck on, luckily the millwright I bought the machine from had a...

Finally a post not of disaster!

It going to lie I stole that from Curtis from CEE on YouTube. Why didn’t I think of that!? Clear sailing (I hope) now! I’ll be making some bushings on it shortly. Again I really appreciate all the help, direction, and camaraderie from the real machinists!

Finally a post not of disaster!

YES! Nothing broke or blew up! I figured out the threading on my lathe! I never noticed this rod that moves with the metic/inch selector behind the “stud gear” Then I realized it’s some sort of stopping rod so you can’t engage the metric clutch if something is there. Realized that nothing...

Well I really messed up this time.

This thread wasn’t going to be the help thread for my gears but since some helpful members were already trying to decipher my enigma: I didn’t mention The lathe is labeled McDougall made locally in Galt. A redit users father worked there a long time ago and said this looks NOTHING like what...

Well I really messed up this time.

Ok I’ve got a few ideas. The compound is about 3 1/8x5x11, I think making a riser block would also be easily doable to make it functional. I would like a compound still: @Susquatch I like the idea of tie rods holding the whole thing together. I could do it on one side but the other has the...
