The hypocrisy and unfairness in schooling

Or perhaps a better title would be 'Two lessons about school I wish I had learned before I started school'! I just couldn't let @Susquatch 's post go unanswered altho it was so off topic I decided to put my reply here. @Susquatch said "Because I was a highschool drop out, I had to take the...

    Clarkson end mill holder

Since I have a crap load of Clarkson end mills I decided to acquire a proper Clarkson end mill holder. The holder came with 4 collet sizes; 1/4 to 5/8. The 1/4 collet however seems to be way too tight. The end mill should turn freely in the collet before tightening but not in this one. As far as...

    Lathe bed flatness

I finally got around to checking the accuracy of the bed on my small 9 inch South Bend lathe. I took advantage of the fact I currently have the lathe all in pieces to take the entire bed and put it upside down on my 3' surface plate so that I could check deviation in the bed with feeler gauges...

    Santa was here!

Today was a fun day for me! Santa was here! I consider myself very fortunate in that I do not celebrate Christmas in the traditional way. That is to say I consider every day a cause for celebration and over here Santa is not restricted to visits on Christmas Day. He comes around on regular...

    Tips/Techniques Organizing steel.

I need some ideas on how to organize my steel. Right now I have a large pile on the floor in one place that I am constantly tripping over, another pile in an out of the way corner where it is very difficult to find anything at the back, and another pile of shorts on a table that is consuming...

    Eclipse

Anyone else following the eclipse? Right now here in Hamilton I have cloud cover just thick enough to totally obscure the sun. Satellite pics show a band of clouds between Kingston and London. That suggests @Susquatch has clear skies. I'm hoping the cloud cover here will shift to the east and...

Which surface plate should I get?

I have only a small 12X9 surface plate that seems too small for most things I want to do. Like checking the precision of my old Kurt 6 inch vise (about 17 inches long). I'm ready to spring for a new surface plate but can't decide if I should get a 24X18 or a 36X24. I would go for a grade B black...

    Storage for heavy stuff?

I'm looking for ideas/inspiration on how to store some of my heavy accessories. I have several projects nearing completion that are going to need an appropriate home in my shop. Namely 10 inch rotary table, dividing head, and some extra milling vises. Since these are all heavy I was wondering...
