Tips/Techniques Super easy durable cast aluminum match plate patterns

Really, I was just playing around with production patternmaking here for fun, I'll never cast enough pattern rappers to justify making this permanent production pattern. Or even mounting the patterns on a wooden matchplate for that matter. I have another one made the same way for making sprue...

Tips/Techniques Super easy durable cast aluminum match plate patterns

The matchplate is sandwiched between the cope and drag and the drag is rammed up first. Meanwhile, the muller is running, processing the sand from the matchplate casting session. Once the drag is made the cope is rammed up, with the sprue pin in place. After the pin is pulled and the cope...

Tips/Techniques Super easy durable cast aluminum match plate patterns

I've seen people cobble together steel spacer frames and backfill the seams with sand and pray to Vulcan for no leakers in order to cast metal match plate patterns before (Mr. Pete has an old series on his youtube channel showing this way), but the hack I came up with to save time and effort is...

    Pouring shanks for crucibles

Several months ago for reasons I still can't quite comprehend, a fellow from our near Kingston was willing to take these off my hands (the Salamander in the middle is top shelf for a clay graphite crucible and has lots of life left in it but the other two A6's are DOA and near retirement) in...

    Ammco 6" Metal shaper

Awesome! It's certainly sufficient to do its job as-is. As for a few small blemishes, as you say, a little bondo and paint and it'll look perfect. I won't tell anyone :) Jeff

Tips/Techniques Show your shop related 3DP

I mostly only use mine to print foundry patterns, but I did print out this fillet iron organizer when I got sick of them somehow suddenly migrating to various random parts of the house every time I'm just about to need them... Total CAD newbie here, so even with printed patterns the fillet...

Not sure yet, still waiting to hear some of the details and receive a final quote. I'll report back when I know more Jeff

    molten metal temp

I must admit I don't use mine as often as I probably should. I tend to rely on the 'poor man's pyrometer' - dip a preheated steel rod in the melt then see how much (if any) sticks to it, to judge whether pouring temperature has been reached, as well as other clues like what colour of hot it's...

    molten metal temp

I'm a year late to this party, but I really like mine, built mine similar to Henry Davis AKA HT1 metalworks', using a MIFCO replacement thermocouple tip that needs no protective sheath. I know some guys on the home foundry forums forums who instead buy cheaper probes then make or buy graphite...

    Ammco 6" Metal shaper

Nice! I do all my sand molding and casting out of my 12x16 detached shed, I can get a lot done in there but space to lay down more than a few molds at a time is the main bottleneck. Looking forward to seeing the casting! Jeff
