  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year.     That sounds like a great idea. You would still need an encoder on the spindle to coordinate threading. A person could do alot of stuff in that 4 inch window.

    To answer Susquatch's original query, I have used predominantly dnmg 432 to 435 coated inserts, mostly Sandvik, since 1979. A right hand tool holder with 2 degrees of lead allow me to turn, face and plunge which is a real timesaver when you want to make chips.

    I use coated carbide inserts. I just don't buy the newest coated cryogenically treated carbide inserts that command substantially higher prices than the coated inserts I have on hand.     True, top of the line cutters/coatings may have come a long way in six years but 95% percent of us use older technology not 'cutting edge' tooling.

    It is an amazing process to watch. I have never seen this method used on a manual lathe. I have only seen it used on cam driven automatic lathes (screw machines). Milling threads behind a shoulder is especially mouth dropping.
