  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Benchtop Hobbing Machine - The BHM

Well that's a good question ! The T10 leadscrews I have seemed flimsy, and I really don't like brass running on steel. The leadscrews are a metric trapezoidal tooth form so they would transmit the load properly, but the brass nuts were sloppy, with a few thou backlash. OK for 3D printers but...

Benchtop Hobbing Machine - The BHM

Well ! Thanks for all the kind words! I have managed to upload some videos to youtube of the BHM cutting a spur gear and a helical gear for your viewing pleasure. Spur gear: 15 deg Helical gear:

Benchtop Hobbing Machine - The BHM

Yep all mine. The delrin gears are testers - the machine is quite solid and shouldn't have any trouble with steel gears - just like milling, with a slower feed rate. Next job is mitre/bevel gears with an involute cutter. Its all in the software!

Running Linux and which version in order to run WINE or some other WIN-7..WIN-10 option.

Dual boot? It's a PITA of course. I use an external USB drive to save data when needed between Windoze apps and the Ubuntu apps. No more WINE.

Benchtop Hobbing Machine - The BHM

The BHM - a benchtop hobbing and gear cutting machine. This project has been brewing for a couple of years and its now in a working, but not pretty stage, so I thought I would share a few details. Gear hobbing is a highly efficient and accurate machining process used to create teeth on gears...

    First crash

It might be well worth your time, and a lot less damage to your wallet if you could spend a couple of hours with another machinist to see how some operations are done safely and accurately. Parting is one of those 'trial by fire' lessons at first. There are some well used and trusted books on...

    bronze bushing question

That shouldn't be a problem at all. Thats what oilites are designed for.

    Lathe test bar

The straightest rods I have found are hydraulic cylinder rods. They are also chromed and dead hard. Drill rod is nowhere near straight enough IMHO. I scrounged some from a local equipment place that services farm machinery. Cutting to length was a job though.

    Whisk(e)y, wine and cheese!

Absolutely perfect. The ageing process happens in the barrels as the tannins from the oak and peat work their magic. After bottling, there is no change at all. So theres no point in claiming a 1980 Glenmorangie is 45 years old. It isnt! If it was bottled after 12 years in oak, then it is a 12...
