  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Deal of a lifetime?

I think I just got really lucky. Spotted an ad yesterday for a First LC-1 1/2 marked for parts/scrap. Looked at the photo and the mill didn’t look all that old or tired, description said there’s a problem with the head, sounds like a bag of marbles when it runs. Otherwise no issues. Now...

    Test bar ...again

Interesting, what type of bearings? My understanding is that roller bearings, even ABEC 7/P4 grade precision ones usual have a tenth or so of runout, no?

    TIR drift of Set-Tru Chuck

From what you’ve said it doesn’t sound to me like the problem has anything to do with the camlock spindle nose or back plate but one thing you could do to rule that entirely is check the radial runout on the outside edge of the backplate and record the TIR and position of the high or low point...

    Hendey T&G Lathe

Well it looks like I’ve learned another lesson! Or at least I’ve learned it in practice (again?) Everything is rubber! I did some additional checks on the saddle ways today with an indicator mounted like this in each corner and pushing and pulling to see what kind of movement I got. My...

    Machine quality question

I did a bit of research into this today since I was curious. It looks like there are a number of European companies still producing manual lathes but with the exception of Weiler they don’t really look “high end” at least the way I would define it. They look like a typical 14-20” swing engine...

    Hendey T&G Lathe

In the arrangement I showed I’m only measuring against one dovetail. The rear support only rests on a brass pad. As I moved the tool I gently pulled the front support against the one dovetail. When I have time I would like to remake the tool with more rigid clamps and larger diameter rods so...

My tool in that photo is patterned after a tool that machine tool rebuilders have used for a long time. @Mcgyver has a good write up on his version on his site. It’s much better than mine. https://www.metallum.shop/2021/11/06/versatility-of-the-alignment-tool/

    Machine quality question

I have some experience with the supply chain in China for a different category of products. I’d imagine there are a lot of similarities. I’ve also done some research into the machine tool specific supply chain but information is limited since supply chains in China can be quite opaque. From...
