  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Includes some metal working

My almost finished guitar amp project. It made noise for the first time today. The metal working component is the fabrication of the chassis. Also includes are some cabinetry, upholstery and good old tube electronics. Still more cabinetry and upholstery to finish.

Inquiring about rotary phase converters and VFDs.

I like the idea of the rotary as it leaves the possibility of adding future machines. As for the noise it could be mounted in a separate room or in a shelter box outside the shop wall? If it was done that way I would want an a light at the door so I wouldn't forget and leave it on.

Backing plate for 4 jaw chuck

I agree. Get the register right at the center and if you get out to the edge of that inner circle where your red line is you should be golden.

    I'm a mill beginner

I agree, buy cutters and tools as you need them. Avoid the cheap kits from Busy Bee and Amazon. My experience is their quality ranges from mediocre to garbage. I have sets and find I use the same 2 or 3 of the kit and the rest never get used. I do quite a bit of motorcycle work and 6 and 8 mm...

What's your pick for lathe size if you could only own one?

Ha ha. Well maybe a bit exaggerated. I did work in a shop that had a 20 inch by about 12 feet. It was possible to do pretty fine work with it. The real feature that made it sweet to use was the large hole through the headstock ( about 5 inches). I don't think in the 2 plus years I was there I...

What's your pick for lathe size if you could only own one?

The biggest your wallet, space and wife will allow. It depends so much on what you want to do. I started with a 9 inch South Bend and moved up to a 14X40. It's about right for what I do and could afford. Wish I could have kept the South Bend and had two.

    Tapping arm discussion

I worked in a Tool and Die shop for a short while where they tapped many small holes. The tapping arm was awesome. However in my home shop a dedicated tool like that requires a dedicated space. Space is always in short supply. I'd be more inclined to a tapping head I could use on my Mill and...

Experience with a King 14x40 lathe?

My lathe is the C0636. A while back I damaged one of the little oilers and Modern insisted I bring the machine serial number to order a replacement. I didn't realize running changes were that extensive.
