  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Silly thing is, I have a pretty good idea of what those "Singer" sewing machine accessories are used for, thanks to a little commercial sewing training. Old Treadle Sewing machines, have proven to be some of the worst investments, as far as value as an antique, goes. Expensive as hells, in...

New to me Ammco 7" Metal shaper

If the pulley isn't too munged up, you may be able to simply remove and replace it, or just relocate it. Small drive pulleys, are cheap as chips! :P Reversible is good! But checking if it needs reversing 'before' you bolt it up, is even better! I don't think you are really going to get value...

That's exactly why the wheel on the end of the second stage driven pulleys (that's the knob that they built the belt Guard around, so as to leave it accessible!), is knurled, so you can get a good grip to cycle the shaper through it's stroke, before you apply power and break something more...

You may need to put an intermediate plate between the base and the motor mounts, if you cannot move that pulley inwards on the motor shaft to get aligned with the driven pulley. Or, at least, it looks in this picture like you would need to push the mount almost off the edge of the machine mount...

    Calgary Library

That sucks. Regina had a GREAT Library. Though, I was deeply saddened, the day I went in to kill a few hours (wife had an appointment) reading through their collection of Model Engineer magazines, maybe 75 years or so worth, when they told me that the had dumped the whole lot into the...

Meh. If it provides what the users want or need, I'll be pretty happy to see the money spent on projects like that, rather than free drugs handed out at Free Drugs sites. Especially if it isn't repentantly ugly! When I was living in Moose Jaw SK, (1992-1999) I thought that the Public Library...

Agree Agree. You re not really going to notice the difference between a 1/3hp motor, and a 1/2hp one, in this case, until you start pushing the machine to do stuff it was never intended, ie: taking huge heavy cuts. If you want to see how hard you can push it, you 'might' be able to see a...

New to me Ammco 7" Metal shaper

That is a great diagram for a basic multi purpose shaper tool holder! I would point out that I have seen many references that suggested that the tool holder be mounted, essentially, upside down, which puts the cutting edge in line with the pivot point of the clapper box. Easy way to picture it...

New to me Ammco 7" Metal shaper

IIRC, Ammco comes from the name Automotive Maintenance Machine Company, so yeah, back when almost every corner garage did stuff like resurfacing brake disks and drums, and many other jobs that almost nobody does, anymore, they filled a gap by producing affordable tools that did these specialized...

Like I said before, the original Ammco R/T, isn't anything special, nor is the indexing centers. Dunno what you are calling a Universal but none of the Ammco stuff was very complex to reproduce. You can make either with pretty basic shop tools. The R/T in particular, as it was, IIRC, just three...
