A quick update to those who may have an interest in such matters. A trio of Vulcan "V" bombers in three scales. These are essentially pretty well as cast and are ready for a bit/lot of bench work to convert them into master patterns. Maybe about 20 sweaty hours ahead of me. A big problem right...

In the main, Ilzro 12, although I do use 356 too. Played with castings on and off all my life. Came to Canada with a large UK company in '77 with a view to "convert" the North American automotive industry from Iron to Aluminum. This did not go down too well with our UK customers at all! Company...

Hi Chris, I thought that I had retired from diecasting too. However it proved not to be the case! Cheers, John (Brampton)

    Some questions about foundry building

Hi, also in the Torontoish area, Brampton to be exact. What materials are you planning on melting? It has been suggested that you use regular firebricks for the base and crucible plinth. That is the best of ideas. Infill the joints with tamped down dry sand and point with fireclay. For the...

Thank you so much for your input Peter. I really should put some effort into this before my “best before” marker comes due. So much to do and so little time... Many years ago, shortly after arriving in Canada from the UK, I went through a period where I happened upon several brilliant minds. All...

Peter, I was looking at your truly splendid radial engine project on a different forum. It is quite obvious that you have ICU’s well and truly weighed up. I have had a recurring notion running through my head for many years involving a new and quite novel mode of power generation. Yes, it...

A reply to the request for photos of the aluminum tooling and a few new models

Hi Peter, Yes, a very thin thermal barrier is applied to the cavity and the rest of any thermal energy is dispersed by die mass, radiation and convection. The capacity of aluminum to undertake all these body blows is still quite amazing to me too. John

No, I build the master patterns by eye and hand and mistakes. There are many considerations which come into play during the generation of the model which I can usually resolve via modifications as I go along. The original model from which I make my hard master is a little fragile and has to be...

Preheating the mould would be essential due to the massive chilling factor of aluminum also to dry off any moisture from the surface of the mould. I have witnessed some rather interesting Vesuvius like effects due to the introduction of molten metals into damp places. Believe me, even pewter at...
