  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    What size Lathe ?

    Yes, I design, produce and finish everything in my shop, anodizing included. I primarily start with 5" dia stock.

    I make centerpin reels and use a 12x36 lathe and feel it's barely adequate for the job! Once I move my shop I will be buying a 14x40. Buy the biggest lathe (within reason) you can the first time if possible.

    Laser Cutter/Engraver

    The pic on the bottom could be laser engraved but more likely chemical etched if massed produced. That said, yes my 30w galvo would deep engrave stainless like that in about 3 passes without issue. I deep engraved stainless to .02" deep often, especially for watch parts.

    Ya the jewelry stores are just piling on with that type of marketing, I'm surprised it's only 2K you need to spend to get listed.

    Go for the mill! Watches are nice but you can't do much with them (I say this and I make watches :p) besides Rolex is way over rated, I've yet to understand how a company that produces more than 1 million watches per year can charge the prices they do.....good marketing I guess. If it must go...
