  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Bought a SouthBend 9” - Hints on things to look for at setup?

Thanks for the insight. It appears all original hardware, but I had planned to swap out to Gr 8 Socket Head cap screws where feasible as I prefer the Allen wrench to flathead. There may be places where that's not possible, but I suppose I will figure that out. I would retain all original...

Bought a SouthBend 9” - Hints on things to look for at setup?

I just purchased a South Bend lathe this afternoon. I will be disassembling it at its current location and bringing it home over the weekend. It looks to be in very clean shape with very little debris or other issues. Because I will have it apart anyway, just looking for thoughts on things that...

Tips/Techniques Workshop Organization- things that have made a difference for you

Number 9 is key for me. An overly messy shop tends to get in the way of my motivation to start a new project, or return to finish one off. Whenever I arrive in my shop and the main work surfaces are clear and ready for me to go (and tools and such put back into their most recent "ideal" spot) I...

    Tool Chucking Reamers

Because there can never be enough information to geek out over... https://www.mcgill.ca/engineeringdesign/step-step-design-process/basics-graphics-communication/principles-tolerancing It has a rather (ahem) lengthy discussion on fits....and it might send you into one.

    Machine CX709 - QCTP?

So, installed the BXA toolpost. Fits nicely. Had to fabricate a thin 5/8-18 nut to accept the post. OE toolpost had a smaller OD shank, then stepped out to 5/8 and a larger flanged round head to retain in the slide. A little work on the grinder and a few Dremel cutoff disc later and I have a...

    Machine CX709 - QCTP?

Thanks for the comments. I feel 95% sure that its right but its for an institutional purchase and having to rework it just makes it look like we got the wrong one. Unfortunately Busy Bee seems to not know what tool post will fit, despite selling several variations.

    Machine CX709 - QCTP?

Trying to figure out which unit to buy for the quick change toolpost on the Busy Bee CX709. No response from their customer service and calling the store seems to be a waste of my time. Anyone know if the Accusize BXA model will fit this model of lathe? Alternately, some other well known model...

Machine Threading - Power vs Taps/Dies

Thanks. ELS can be added on, as I've now conducted extensive research (30 seconds on Google) and see there are options from full add on kits to DIY websites with schematics, etc. I have been granted confidence from the comments here!

Machine Threading - Power vs Taps/Dies

Thanks for this assessment. No arguments on any counts. On your last point I believe there is also a supply by people who tried to get into the hobby during covid but never really got immersed. Seems there are a lot of "runs well but never really used it". Anyway, thanks!
