Noob needs help with custom HSS tool.

Diamond would definitely work. I don't know about CBN though. I think don't think that my wheel is either of those. I think it's green Silicon Carbide wheel? I'll have to check when I get home to be sure. I was using it to grind the end radius on scraping tools. Final sharpening was with a...

Noob needs help with custom HSS tool.

I'm glad to hear it! I'm also a fan of Blondihacks. Useful resource and entertaining. To sharpen carbide you need a special grinding wheel. I don't remember what they're made of off hand, but I always think of mine just as "The Green Wheel".

    Where to start...

I'll add another hat to the 9-10" swing lathe pile. It's a good compromise if you don't know exactly what you need/will do, while still having good capabilities and not being too massive. I'm starting to outgrow my 10x36 lathe, but have gotten lots of good work out of it and will continue to...

Bison Vise FPU 8 inch, Thorold, ON

A tool store near me has a 4" vise of similar design to this one. I've messed around with it and it's pretty cool. Since it has a gib for the movable jaw, you can really dial in the play to exactly what you want, and if you're very space limited it'd probably help since the projection out past...

    1947 Atlas lathe $2000 Langford

Sure, but your initial post wasn't quibbling over the price. Your post reads as don't buy an Atlas under any circumstances because they do nothing but chatter. That's my main gripe. "ANY replacement" How about a 7x14 mini lathe? Obviously, that's not a comparable machine, but that fits what...

    1947 Atlas lathe $2000 Langford

Atlas made a lever operated turret tailstock. I think it was basically a replacement quill in the standard tailstock casting. I think that's probably what that turret is, not an MT turret. IMO that's an expectations issue. The Atlas was an inexpensive lathe in its day and you have to...

    1 1/2 - 8 TPI jacobs chuck

I've got one on my Atlas 10F. It was super handy before I got a drill press, but sees much less use now. I still use it every once in a while.

    Britannia Lathe $2000 Hamilton/Guelph Ontario

Super interesting lathe with a very cool story. If his description of scrape marks is correct then IMO his price is reasonable considering the extras it looks like it comes with, but a little too far and a little too small for me (not that I didn't wrestle with it for a couple days). If...

Hendey metal planer, $2500, Guelph, ON

I went to university with him. I don't really know him, but we moved in the same circles so I have a couple mutual friends. He seems like a really cool guy. He isn't too far from me so maybe I'll ask one of them if they'd introduce me properly at some point. I'd love to walk around his shop!
