    Garbage Steel

Can't speak from experience on carbon steel but I can regarding buying off shore aluminum alloys! It's fine for working with but don't try to anodize it, all kinds of problems occur. Once I learned that I only buy Kaiser!

    How to hold this part...

This ^ I also think you are adding unnecessary work, which IMO will complicate things adding lots of potential for inaccuracies. I think back boring would be best. What is the intended use for ? Something specific or general use?

External Jaws for a 3 jaw

I did this with one of my 5" 3 jaw chucks! Sent the jaws in to be annealed then machined them, tapped and ready, sent them back in for hardening. They are of course dedicated to soft jaws.

rotary table and the number of slots

Nice job Susquatch! I would have did the same but I wanted the encoder as flat as possible to stay out of the way. Good to know about the hijack stuff too :D

As promised, here's my mounting idea! Nothing fancy just some 1018 plain carbon steel machined to fit the application. Sorry for the hijack @Hruul.....

    CA-ON Jewelers rolling mill

Hey Stuart, Thanks for the offer. I might take you up on that, I live a couple hours from you. I'm still a ways out from refining my gold and I was starting to think I'd make one but maybe now I won't. I'll reach out when I get closer to that point. Thank you

rotary table and the number of slots

I'll snap a pic of it when I head out to the shop. It's a four axis model from DRO PROS, I used Z as the quill and U for the knee.

rotary table and the number of slots

Most 6" rotabs have three slots for reasons such as Susquatch mentions, four slots will be common in 8" and up. I prefer my 8" with the four slots due to the type of work I use it for combined with the specialized fixtures I make to go on it.
