What did you do for a career and would you pick it again?

All careers have ups and downs (I'm currently in a down, but I've had many ups). Sounds like you've been in a down time for longer than you'd like. I'm a mechanical engineer who got himself into aerospace, building parts to modify airplanes and helicopters. That's when my career really got...

Colchester Master 2500 GC Auction Ottawa

Oh my. Just like the one I got to use for about 10 years at the start of my engineering career. If I lived in Ottawa I'd buy it just out of nostalgia, not because I need another lathe. The missing steady-rest is occasionally a problem, but the missing chip drawer is downright unfair.

    FREE Brazed Carbide Lathe Tools

I'd be interested. I could swing by some evening after work to pick them up (I drive from Calgary to Irricana every day)

Great idea. Do you have the box secured to the table, or does it work well enough just resting there? Does the motor torque drop much when the controller is turning slowly? If you are planning future changes, I'd suggest a die-cast Hammond box for this project.

That worked really well. Thank you everyone again. :) It really never occurred to me that I could install the part in the tool-holder. Once I did, I found several possible ways. In other news, the mounting plate for my 4-jaw chuck just arrived. On to the next project!

I will definitely try some of these improvements out and get back to you all. The toolholder has a 5/8" opening so the end-mill does indeed fit inside. Whether there's enough clearance to complete the cut is another matter, but I'm optimistic. With the compound rest spun around I can't see...

Hi I got this set up on my lathe and just questioning what else I should do to make it work. Photo below. I'm doing this crazy set-up because I don't have a milling machine. In the lathe chuck is an end mill that I will use to mill a flat on the bar that's on the cross-slide. I'm using the...

    What technology changed

They are not equivalent devices. That is an awesome rheostat you have there. Take good care of it! I think that's also called a "variac" but maybe someone more knowledgeable needs to correct me. The wiper bar on the top is covering the "output" spec but I assume it can vary from 0-120VAC...
