    Angular contact bearings

Those scopes are difficult for imaging. You need a good mount, off axis guider and lots of patience. A better choice from a dark sky is a 70mm and up refractor. Tom

    Angular contact bearings

Sure. Here's an overview on some of the photos. https://www.astrobin.com/users/tomb18/ If you think lathes and accessories cost alot, think again. One filter for imaging can cost $2000 and you need 3 of these.... I take the photos from a Montreal suburb and the light pollution is strong. The...

Yes, found a video on adjusting the cross slide backlash. Can't get it perfect but up to now, didn't realize you need to take into account the backlash. Lots to learn. All the rest, are rock solid.

    Angular contact bearings

Well since this thread has started and I'm in better shape than I thought, I just noticed that the cross slide has play in it. If I grab it and push it to the back of the lathe it moves. Same as if I pull it to the front. Shouldn't this be rigid or is it determined from the play in the dial...

Ok, I think I solved the issue with the noise! Never noticed this before! The belt was really loose. I tightened it up and the noise is now gone! So maybe I don't need to do any of this.

    Angular contact bearings

Thanks for all the replies. The reason I want to do this, is that the lathe is horribly loud during operation. I mean it really sounds bad. Rattling and screeching. I have narrowed it down to either the spindle bearings or the shaft that the motor pully attaches to that has the reduction...

    Angular contact bearings

Hi I want to change the spindle bearings on my king 7x12 lathe. I understand that sealed angular contact bearings are the best to use as opposed to tapered bearings. My question is quality vs price. I see I can get them at McMaster Carr for close to 200$ and I also see them at other sites...

New to threading: Need to make male threaded cap

Thanks for all the info. I got the thread pitch from someone else, but then decided to double check... Turns out it is not 24tpi but somewhere between 32 and 40. I suspect it is metric. So I'm waiting for the metric thread gauge. This may be a problem since my lathe has only imperial threads. Tom

New to threading: Need to make male threaded cap

Hi, I'm new to threading never having done this before. I have a telescope that has a small polar scope that fits into the polar axis of the mount. I want to replace this whole thing with a threaded cap since it sticks out too far. So the threaded part of the polar scope is 24tpi, and it is...

What to do when a tap breaks in a hole??

When I was a teenager, I would go to the pharmacy down the street...I could buy anything, Nitric acid, sulfuric acid, you name it. I once bought Sulfur, Saltpeter and granulated carbon.... Mixed up a batch and succeeded in burning a hole through our back porch.... Could have been worse I...
