  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Spitfire needs work

An airplane was my biggest financial mistake ever. It's not what you think though because I didn't buy it. When I lived out west years ago I was asked if I was interested in buying some airplane wrecks. They had the remains of 4 spitfires. Real ones not replicas with data plates. For those that...

    Tool Amazing Vise

I have used all 3. The first 2 when I helped out an old guy on his farm. The ice cream maker was used when there were ice chunks floating down the river.

I switched from Mach 3 to a centroid acorn. I'm 100% happy with the change.

    First crash

I tried a few different parting tools in my lathe. I went from little to zero success with the first few tools that I tried. Then I bought a quality parting tool and my success rate went up to 100%. I mostly part tool steel and aluminum and use LPS gold as a lubricant. By the way I think the...

    Car designs suck

Pretty sure the main thing this place is known for is thread drift. Machining information is secondary.

    US Tariffs

For the most part the tariff is based on the country of origin of the product. For example if you order a made in Poland 5C set-tru collet chuck from the USA there should not be any tariff applied.

Tool Does Anyone Still Use a Wiggler?

I still use a wiggler on the cnc mill some times. It's a simple device that works well.

WTH - Got these inserts on Ali

I would be shocked if those are genuine Sandvik inserts. I tried some Chinese supplied inserts and got mixed results. Some chipped easily and some were fantastic. I think a lot of the vendors on ali express have no issue with putting a fake label on what they sell. Even if they are not genuine...

How to clean up a crusty ruler

The results are impressive. I was going to suggest blue scotchbrite disks and a die grinder but I think your way produced a better outcome.

Made in/shop in Canada options - Links or recommendations only!

Since we are talking about hardwood lumber there is a deal available for Nova Scotians. The Therialt sawmill sells kiln dried rough hardwood lumber for a really good price. They have oak, maple, birch, curly maple. Last time I was there about a year ago it was all under $3 a board foot except...

    Emco Compact 5 Tool Block

It looks like the one in the bottom right of this photo. I'm away from home working now and won't be home to see if it's still in the scrap bin for 6 weeks or so. I'm pretty sure it's still in there. If you can wait that long let me know and then send me a reminder in 5 or 6 weeks. The one in...
