If you cut the shaft back to the end of the key way then taper it down to a point you can submerge the crank in water and weld an oversized piece of shaft to the crank then turn it true and recut the keyway.

Don't believe it was annealed, I had to knock the mill scale off it with a grinder before I could cut it with HSS, and it near fried a blade on my portable band saw cutting a 1.5" piece of it.

You can overspeed an electric motor on a VFD but your torque drops off quickly, the high frequency that drive is capable of is for high speed motors( i.e spindle motors) which are designed to function at that output having different core / rotor designs, higher tolerance balancing and precision...

Most small horsepower 3ph motors (under 15hp) get thrown in the dumpster now, check you local scrap dealer you can probably buy a motor for scrap price that just needs bearings.

It took a lot of restraint not to bring home the little knee and column machine, It works well and there is a cabinet full of cutters and a another arbor support to go with it. I just don't have the room. There was a vertical head for it but I think it was mistakenly thrown in the scrap bin.
