    Shoulder check

I always shoulder check. I drove a cube van for a service truck for 15 years. Not being able to in that vehicle always bothered me. I ride a motorcycle as well so I have learned to be an extra cautious driver. I have extended family in the UK. A family member there recently bought a new car. I...

I had a parcel delivered by Canada Post on Monday. It was supposed to be delivered Tuesday and the tracking info says it is still in transit.

4” Milling Machine Vise, $150, Calgary, AB

The movable jaw does lift especially if you are clamping a small object near the top of the jaws. There is a plate under the movable jaw on both sides with 4 bolts that holds the jaw in place. snugging them up before tightening the vice really helps.

I have the identical vice. I think I paid around $200 for it in 2010 from BusyBee tools.

    Sharpening large drill bits?

I have a gauge to make sure the angle is correct and it is important that both cutting edges are the same length. I find big drill bits are easier to sharpen than small ones. I have a 8" grinder with a white medium wheel for sharpening high speed steel and a 6" grinder with a fine white wheel...

Mounting A Kappa Box On My KLR650

I have a nice Kappa 42 litre K-Force top case for my Suzuki DL1000. I wanted to be able to use it on the KLR650 as well so I made an aluminium plate for the KLR rack to install the box. It was a bit of a process. I went to the local aluminium welding shop and they gave me a piece of 3/16" plate...

    Mystery lathe, for real

I had a SouthBend 10K lathe that was metric. I needed both the compound feed and the cross feed nuts for it. Imperial ones were available at a price but metric ones were not available. I made a tap to cut the compound nut if I remember correctly it was 10mm x 2.5mm Acme. The tap was made from w1...

    Mystery lathe, for real

It's worth $.07 a pound as scrap metal. It appears to have a cast base and if it in the 12" x 36" range it would probably weigh close to 1000 Lbs. So $70.00 delivered to a scrap yard.

WTB Reliable small truck or car. Calgary Area?

From my experience dealers do not like working on older vehicles. Also dealers are a lot more expensive than private shops. One thing I would try before you let them try locate the noise is remove the belt then run the engine and see if the noise is still there.

    UPS gripe

Is there a good shipper in Canada? Between Purolator and Fedex we had three recent parcels damaged. A large flat box crushed with a boot print on it another parcel crushed with a tire print on it and some small steel hydraulic lines that were shrink wrapped to a 8' 2x4 somehow they broke the 2x4.

How to stop your android phone spying on you

In October 2004 I applied for a job as a mechanic with BC Hydro the government owned electric utility. A short while later I was contacted and told I was the successful applicant but first I had to do an interview with an outside company Western Management Consulting. They gave me a phone number...

    Identifying an odd thread.

An employer of mine had a nice dial type bore gauge. I needed a longer extension rod for it to measure the cylinder bore taper in an engine block. It had an odd thread it appeared to be a 1mm thread pitch but cut on a .250" diameter rod as far as I could tell. Our lathe could not cut a metric...

I have been running Linux on my desktop as my main operating system since 2003. I started with Fedora 0.9 and probably seven or eight years ago switched to Linux Mint with the Mate desktop, it's an Ubuntu based distro. There are programs that will allow you to rum Windows programs on Linux...
