  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Need to get drill bits for tapping

If you’re looking for a nice workshop book that has lots of information, including what size drills to use for what size taps, I’d recommend: https://www.engineersblackbook.com/ Spiral Bound, the pages are dirt and grime resistant. If you get the imperial version, then it also includes most of...

Shop Tools to keep out in the open?

Not yet… I’m thinking of something that I can roll up and then pull down when needed, that doesn’t block light. Something that would end up being like a clear roller blind… Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I think I’m going to keep rulers and clamps out in the open, everything else can...

Tool Good Quality Files and where to purchase them?

I stopped off at a distributor yesterday that stocks Pferd files. They had a few oddball files in stock plus 14” tapered bastards. The coarseness is a big change from my 10” bastard and is it ever thick. You could say it’s a fat bastard for sure. So far so good, it’s given me confidence to...

Shop Tools to keep out in the open?

Every time I do something that throws chips all around the workshop it takes me ever to clean up my basement workshop. So maybe my wife is partially right- I should have my tools in drawers or cupboards. But there are some tools I’d never want to put in a cupboard or drawer because they’re...

    Zenair CH601HD

Oh boy, I’m so jealous. You’re living my dream of building a home built aircraft. I no longer have my license and am unlikely going to get it back- and building an aircraft that I’m not going to fly doesn’t have the same allure.

    Product Cordless tools

Festool has an “exoskeleton” to help with this. I can imagine if you spend all day working over your head this would be a fantastic investment.

    Product Cordless tools

I was reading an article about making battery packs for model planes, and the fellow was using a “Pencil” spot welder to weld on the tabs for the battery cells. If I ever jump to cordless tools, that might be a good addition to allow me to remake my own battery packs.

Funny dot on Windows 10 user icon

I had a bugger of a time with getting Windows 11 to not use OneDrive. It’s still not cleanly being unused, but at least it’s not continually reminding me to backup empty folders.

    US Tariffs

My memory may be getting a bit dim, but last time this president was in office I was thinking of importing a lathe directly from China to avoid his Tariff’s. I believe I called the Canadian department responsible for duties and was advised that for a product that was shipped via the US I could...

    Rust is the Enemy

What about moving to Winnipeg? Too cold to rust for 6 months of the year. Some treatment required for the shoulder seasons. Summer can be humid, but that’s only 2 months.

Tool Good Quality Files and where to purchase them?

I've found an answer: "Example: At a length of 250 mm, a cut 1 file has 9 teeth/1 cm of file length. A 100 mm long cut 1 file has 17 teeth/1 cm of file length, however. The higher number of teeth on shorter files ensures the same ease of use (in terms of force input, guidability and stock...

    Navigating Tariffs Together

One of my local Winnipeg distributors will bring in KBC items, so far I’ve only paid the KBC sale price. No shipping.

I used cleaning vinegar (Canadian Tire, Sobies) and it usually took all the Mill Scale off in a day.

Funny how now Made in China is far more acceptable to me now… as long as it’s not Made in USA.
