  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Vise v. Y-travel

I think the idea of that mounting the vice inline with the X axis dates back to when horizontal mills were the standard. This is based only on experience using my Hardinge horizontal mill and haven't read this anywhere, so read this as rampant speculation, but from using that machine with a...

Tool Depth Micrometer - which one

I think you'll be happy with it. I have several different things from Lufkin (although not their depth mic) and all of them seem to be of good quality.

Now the Colchester has a Mini Me

I wonder how common of a feature this was back in the day. I was really surprised when I read about replaceable ways in my Leblond's manual, especially since they are hardened.

    Tool What’s your favourite indicator.

I don't have a picture of mine handy, but my favorite is a Lufkin 199A test indicator. primarily because I keep it in a tool holder on my lathe, so it's the most convenient indicator to hand for centering up whatever I'm working on

    newbie fron the UK

What a coincidence, I read that lathes.co.uk article just a couple days ago! It looks like a fascinating machine, although to be honest I did wonder about your motivations building it. Were you just looking for a challenge, did you have some specific requirements that off the shelf machines...

Looking for milling machine purchase help/advice

I know I've gone there and played with every dial and lever on those display machines. I can't imagine every other Tom, Dick, and Harry hasn't done the same and no doubt they never get lubed. I wouldn't put too much stock in comparisons between the floor models feel compared to the actual...

Looking for milling machine purchase help/advice

So far I've found that I buy machines very irrationally. I want the new machine to excite me. While many of the Asian import lathes, mills, etc. would serve my needs just fine, they don't have that look or character or whatever it is that makes me willing to haul 1100 lbs from Montreal back to...

Solidworks for Makers @ CAD30.00 per year

Only two CAD softwares that I have used so far are Creo Parametric and OnShape. I found Creo to be very difficult, although part of that will be that it was also the first CAD package I'd ever used. OnShape on the other hand is fantastic. It runs in a browser with all the compute intensive...

    Morrisburg Flea Market Finds

Eclipse actually made one of similar size and design (including knurled locknut). Here's the two side by side. I definitely prefer the feel of the Moore and Wright, but the Eclipse served me well until now.

    Morrisburg Flea Market Finds

I went with my parents this morning to the flea market in Morrisburg, Ontario and I feel that I made off rather well. There was one seller who had a couple boxes of machining related tools and here's what I picked from the lot. Tesa or maybe Tesatast or maybe Verdict Dial Test Indicator -...

Looking for milling machine purchase help/advice

I'll add another voice to the R8 spindle pile. I bought a mill with a vertical head that takes an obscure collet, a horizontal that takes a common collet, but an unusual one for mill tooling, and have since been loaned another vertical head which takes yet a third type of collet, which is...

Still looking for a lathe ! What do you think ?

You certainly could. My Atlas came with a 1/3 HP motor and I always intended to upgrade it to a 1/2 HP one, but in practice I tend to slip belts before bogging down the motor, so I never bothered. I've read about people putting 1 HP motors on them. That's probably a solid upgrade
