  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Hard to believe this foundry works

Not to slide into politics, but... (hey, I didn't start it in that direction! Moderator, censor thyself?) Not so simple? Bear in mind that if heavy tariffs were applied to these products likely their ability to sell here would collapse, and those jobs along with it. The standard of living in...

    BB vs KBC drill bits

So what constitutes a "Good" drill bit? Material - hardness such that it does not dull quickly, cuts well Accuracy - which means both size and correctly ground Sharp (as delivered - later sharpening is up to me) Price - compared to alternatives These seem obvious. What else? Not like this one:

    Worn nuts for mill leadscrew

I recently emailed @Tomc938 a note about making acetal lead screw nuts. I can't upload the pdf here, but you make want to consider this route. I'm not sure how or if I can post a pdf on the forum.

    Morrisburg Flea Market Finds

I'm unlikely to find a Starrett in this neck of the woods, but maybe I'll modify one of mine to add a lock nut someday.

    Morrisburg Flea Market Finds

Definitely a first for me. And to think that all this time I thought it was "just the way things were" that a tap handle would loosen as you used it. I guess it didn't bother me enough to wonder if there was a better way. That's another project then!

    Air compressor not restarting

To late to edit my previous post but it sounds like it's either the starting cap, OR the centrifugal switch OR the bi-metallic overload switch. Or perhaps more than one of them, but any combination of those should be a lot less costly than a whole new motor.

    Air compressor not restarting

I have taken a lot of motors apart, usually to replace bearings. I don't recall ever having a problem with an end cap not coming off. A gentle tap or two around the sides with your rubber mallet may help. And if you are really going to use a shotgun to kill this mosquito and buy a whole new...

    Air compressor not restarting

Others here have more expertise than me, but my understanding is that especially with caps that size and type, the specs are pretty loose, and that a slightly greater value in this case is not going to hurt anything.

Looking for milling machine purchase help/advice

Welcome to the yak-shaver's club! At the software job I retired from a few years back we had to maintain an entire herd! I have never bought a new machine, but when I thought I might do that I leaned heavily towards PM. This was a few years back and was based strictly on other people's opinions...

    Best steel shaping option

The first thing I'd ask is how precise does this have to be? Not clear if mentioning a saw means "get it close then clean up" or "saw is already close enough". Based on nothing, I'm guessing the 82mm might be more fussy than the width & length?
