  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Tractor parts-looking for a source

Where is your part of Canada? It might help people offering suggestions. Even a general area. Are we talking Inuvik, Whitehorse, Thunderbay, Goosebay…? “Upnorth” doesn’t narrow it down much.

    Proud to be Canadian song

I was doing some research the other day. In 2024, 1.97 million new cars and trucks were sold in Canada. (247,000 cars, 1,670,000 trucks). Meanwhile, Canada assembles 1.9 million motor vehicles per year. Only 12% of these were sold in Canada. Hmmm...

Solvent to remove plastic protective coating from stainless steel

If this is a non-stick coating, I’d proceed with caution. You can remove mechanically, but I’d wear a mask and dispose of the waste. Even so, Teflon impregnates the metal so sne will likely remain. Excessive heat (as low as 200+C) can degrade the fluorocarbon and the by-products can be very...

Fixing Slow Leak in Tractor Tire

You said there’s an old plug in the tire. Check there carefully. Not uncommon for those ‘worms’ to spring a leak. Tubes work, but you lose the ability to just insert another plug if you get another puncture. You can still pull the tube & patch but that’s a bit more work. I have a bunch of...

How to measure high torque values?

My checks on the internet come back with 351 ft-lbs for the lower bolt on the front strut/shock absorber of a 2008 F150. I’m surprised, it seems excessive, but that number reappeared on numerous sites. AND this is the bolt at the bottom of the strut, not just a simple bolt on a shock absorber...

    Cheap Bstrd Thread

Actually, I think you nailed it. I suspect most of us have spent thousands on tools and then proceed to spend hours and hours to repair broken stuff that we could just replace with brand new for a few bucks. But where’s the satisfaction in that?? If we can cheap out and re-use discarded soup...

    Cheap Bstrd Thread

The other day I was looking for a couple of 5/16" stainless steel flat washers. Couldn't find one and it wasn't worth driving to town. Then I realised: the washer was about the same diameter as a nickel. Cheaper too!

    Milky Gear Oil

Can you drill and tap a drain in the housing? How does the lube get from the upper chamber to the lower one? Draining through a bearing? Or is there a gallery? Just wondering if one drain would suffice or if two would be necessary. A friend has a KTM motorbike. Oil change involves removing...

    Chain wear

Was the chain attached to a part that was bouncing during transport? I've seen vehicle tiedowns wear due to movement of the transported vehicle bouncing on its suspension. I can't imagine the bailer has any suspension beyond air in the tires, but that could be enough...

Tool Lathe Cutting Speed Circular Slide rule...

Saw this in a photo of a lathe being auctioned off. Apparently this is mounted on the side of the lathe. Near as I can tell, it's metal and the dimples are for your finger. Rotate the inner wheel to align diameter with cutting speed and the matching RPM is displayed. Recommended cutting...

How to clean inside a cylinder

I’d start with a shock absorber, even a used one from an auto wrecker. Honed cylinder, polished shaft, seals on the piston, even a litre or so of nice hydraulic fluid. You’ll need to configure the inlet/outlet ports and work out the valving, but it should be a dirt cheap starting point.
