  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

    Drilling with the cross slide

Yes, I’m setup for drilling from the tool post (I think of cross slide drilling, as described above on the DS&G, also common for a Mazak). It works fine. I wouldn’t say it is any sort of a game changer. It is nice for deep holes (can move the carriage pretty quickly). As others have said, it...

    SM Utilathe owners

11” Utilathe, levelled using the SM provided jacking screws. Not bolted down. I have a number of machines now, some pretty decent size. Only the 15” lathe is bolted down, and I wish it wasn’t (obviously I can unbolt it, that isn’t the point). I bolted it down because I was struggling with...

    Jacobs Super Chuck or clone?

Some keyless chucks have a location for a hook wrench (and the new chucks that I’ve bought came with a hook wrench). On rare occasion I’ve needed to use the pin wrench to loosen. My Rohm keyless does not have a place for a wrench. Occasionally I’ve needed to use a strap wrench - always...

    Jacobs Super Chuck or clone?

I find the keyless Ali clones work great. If you have good chucks on MT2 arbors - leave them as they are. Pick up a couple MT2 to MT3 sleeves - then you can play both ways (perhaps you’ll end up with another machine that accepts MT2?)

OTTAWA Area - Flat Taper in Mild Steel Plate

0.050” - 0.070” removed on 20 pieces, could be 200 pieces. Grinding would do a real nice job. I have a good sized 3 axis automatic grinder, and I’ve used it a fair amount - that is a lot of grinding! It totally makes sense that your preference is to mill it, then harder to hold (so Dan’s...

    Motor capacitor procedure

Interesting. I’ve changed several, never worried about it. The old tube TVs or a microwave - yes.

    Bed Grind-Harrison Lathe

Have you measured it? Put some straight edges along (even just a quality scale). Is it way off? Is it sitting high (have to remove material)? Maybe it just needs to be shimmed up? Where are you in Alberta?

Can you turn a drill shank down with a carbide tool bit ?

Welding (or silver solder, etc) an extension to a drill bit works well, especially smaller ones, or when you need a straight shank. Your drill is 39/64” (0.609” dia) - so you have a good 0.050” wall to play with. How critical is the application? What resources are available to you? If you...

Can you turn a drill shank down with a carbide tool bit ?

What are you trying to do? Do you just need a longer drill? You can always add on. Drilling is usually not a very high torque application - just end drill/bore to fit the shank. Skim the new shank to ~0.6” outside diameter (for how long you need) and cut the drive end to suit the tool that...

Depth mic set, $30, Sylvan Lake, AB

It is a 0-3” depth mic (reduced range, you hardly ever use the long rods anyway).

That is what my Cinci grinder looks like.

Can you turn a drill shank down with a carbide tool bit ?

Yes. The shank is not hard (you can cut it with a file), it will machine with even just HSS. A little before the flutes it is hard - yes, you can machine it with carbide. I made up a goofy little tight spaces 3/4” drill bit, about 2” long, 3/8” shank, had to cut both ends of the drill bit...

Cincinnati tool and cutter grinder #2- $900 - Orono, On

I’m looking forward to hearing what you do with it. I have the same machine, pretty well dressed. It get used every couple years. I have the space and power, so no big deal.

    Milling machine CA$1,500

My Toolmaster 1D looks very, very, very similar (rounded head, squarish ram), Reeves drive, power feed on X and Y axis, one shot oiler for the table, even the Kurt Anglok. Mine is a #40. I believe mine was made in ‘71 (has Milacron labelling on the back). I see the brake handle is missing...
