  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. FreeCad Stuff

There are also some helpful tutorials on the wiki with step by step instructions. https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Basic_TechDraw_Tutorial

    FreeCad Stuff

Yea, for sure! I'm hardly an expert but I'll do what I can! If you want technical drawings, you can use the 'techdraw' workbench, it's not totally intuitive but once you get the hang of it I think you can get some nice results, certainly good enough to print off and bring to the shop!

    FreeCad Stuff

Yes, I haven't used it a ton lately since I don't have any projects that need CAD going at the moment, but it's still my go-to.

    Getting Copper Patina?

I'm working on a little "artistic" project using some recycled copper pipe, and I would like to get some different coloured patina on the different pieces. I read that you can get blue by wiping with 3 parts water 1 part miracle gro, and green by wiping with 3 parts red wine vinegar and 1 part...

    Edmonton area shops to know?

I’m sort of new to the metalworking world in Edmonton, I thought maybe some of you guys know of stores or resources around town that would be worth knowing about, either for buying tools or materials or whatever else. I’ll start with the places I have visited so far, and I hope you’ll forgive me...

    Learning to braze

A couple updates to the balance bike project. I built a quick jig to attach the “chainstays”, and picked up some new files which improved my copes quite a bit. I made a fusion weld on the bottom of the steerer tube to attach it to what will be the centre part of the fork; this also gives me a...

    Pacific Arc Tig Welding

I've seen a few of his videos, really nice stuff!

Back into it... sorta...maybe a bit.

Thanks! I found a version of that here: https://metalgeek.com/static/cope.pcgi I'll try it out this week and let you know how it works out. Also an excuse for me to buy the set of files I've had my eye on at the tool liquidators!

Back into it... sorta...maybe a bit.

Do you have any tips on how to cut copes by hand? I've just started, and I'm using my 5" grinder and my 'eyecrometer' but the results have not been especially promising so far.

    Hello from Edmonton

Yea it looks really good polished up. My brother is a contractor and I’ve been telling him next time he needs to do a railing I’ll do it for him. I made some shelf brackets with that finish the other day too.

    Learning to braze

Yea that’s pretty steep. What I have seen about it is that the stuff goes a long way. I suppose I could also fusion weld the joint I need to make, it’s not likely that he’s going to break it either way.

    Learning to braze

I'll pick some up next time I go by my local welding supply; next part of the balance bike will be the forks, and I think my design will work best with some silver solder rather than trying to get bronze to wick between two fairly tight tubes.

    Learning to braze

No, I don’t have one. Eventually I want to learn to tig, and I read that starting with gas welding is a good way to get the technique figured out without spending an arm and a leg on equipment. The I got watching Paul Brodie’s “framebuilding 101” YouTube series, where he does a bunch of fillet...

    Learning to braze

Thanks, I may just take you up on that! I've been coping my tubes with my angle grinder, but it's a bit tricky to do, a mill and a hole saw is the way to do it correctly, I think. I'll add some photos of the finished products next week, hopefully, though the wheels for the bike won't get in...

    Learning to braze

A couple of my current and recent projects to practice my oxy-acetylene brazing. I'm building a balance bike for my son, hopefully it will be done by the time he learns to walk! Future frames will probably benefit from some less sketchy fixturing, but I'm trying not to spend too much money until...
