I ordered some of these CVD inserts on Ali:

They were just a great price on some WNMG inserts. At $2.80 each for 6 edges. They might last me forever!

I received these:

They appear to be genuine Sandvik Coromant/Corokey inserts! If so, this is probably the bargain of the century!

But are they the real deal?

@gerritv has been preaching about these for the last couple of years (at least). The DotStripe store, it appears, sells major brand name inserts for next to nothing. They obfuscate the manufacturer names a little but it is easy to decipher.

Maybe these are production overruns? Maybe these are test runs? Maybe they are stock made obsolete by changes in coatings or something else?

Maybe they are fakes?

Whatever they are, they seem to cut metal pretty darn well!

Personally, I tend to believe that these are deliberate production overruns. I would guess that once a line is set up to produce a certain variety of insert, the incremental cost to produce some extras (10%?, 20%?) would be exceedingly small. They can probably still make money even at the very low prices on dotStripe. As long as it doesn't cut into their full price business, they are ahead.

That seems like a pretty high price. I am 99% sure at such a high price these are regular run stuff.

You seriously do not think that it costs the manufacturer to make top of the line insert of this size more than a 1 cad each - do you?

The rest of the price we see is markup. Its all over the place in everything we touch - its not just inserts. Some electronic items have markup in 1000s of percent.

I can buy parts off the shelf in the USA for $20, while the exact same part in Canada is $100-125

I'm just a regular guy. I'm no Wheeler Dealer, I don't usually get wholesale prices, and I don't have the time to bother haggling unless it's big bucks.

For me, that's a great price for brand name Sandvik Inserts. In fact, for me it was a great price for regular inserts let alone Sandvik.

I would be shocked if those are genuine Sandvik inserts. I tried some Chinese supplied inserts and got mixed results. Some chipped easily and some were fantastic. I think a lot of the vendors on ali express have no issue with putting a fake label on what they sell. Even if they are not genuine as long as they perform well I would be happy with them.

I might concur if they were not brand name labeled, have had mixed success with those vague ones as well. But since shifting my insert buying to Dotstripe, I don't have issues. I can predict what is going to arrive, and it does.
that is why I keep recommending Dotstripe store, IMHO they have too much to lose by putting fake labels on stuff.
My theory is that these are older inserts (I used to look up the manufacturer codes to validate that) and/or that when a contract manufacturing facility closes there are a lot of inserts left over. Likely ordered by the skid load. Unlike North America, they don't landfill their stuff, it goes for sale instead.

I'm not sure if this is a Dotstripe thing or an Aliexpress thing, but I will stumble on a listing for amazing price like sale price $1.50 at 80% off. As soon as I log in, the exact same item jumps to $5.75 with a shipping charge. What's up with that? Maybe $1.50 applies if I pick it up at the counter? LOL

That price is for new users to attract them to make an account.
