  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Tool What’s your favourite indicator.

Seems to be lots of indicator threads so why not make more. Here is my favourite indicator. It did come with shorter tips also but the reach is nice.

I've never tried an Interapid, though the used prices suggest people think highly of them.

I've got a Brown & Sharpe Bestest at work that looks after most of what I need.

That long tip does look pretty handy. :)

I don't have a picture of mine handy, but my favorite is a Lufkin 199A test indicator. primarily because I keep it in a tool holder on my lathe, so it's the most convenient indicator to hand for centering up whatever I'm working on

I have an Interapid 312-B (I think) that is just a pleasure to use. Managed to get it with all the fixings for a decent price in eBay.
My second favorite, well it might be a tie actually is my back button Starrett with all the levers etc.

My favorite Dial Test indicator is a 0.0001 Mitutoyo 513-504. It is reversible and has a clutched needle so it can be adjusted to work in most situations. I have several different needles for it including a 3" Dracula needle. (note that you have to derate the indicator when you use longer needles by their length ratio.)

But one of the nicest features of this unit is the long slender barrel that will fit down inside a chamber.

I like the Interapids too, but this Mitutoyo is my favorite.
