What to use to seal oil site glasses?

What do you guys use to get a good seal with oil, like a site glass? The glass is cemented in a disk of metal, which then is fixed to the machine with three screws .... leaks are between the machine and the disk.

It's about impossible to get both parts clean and oil free (the machine cavity will probably seep oil forever) and I've tried some gasket goo but no luck. Do I have to make a gasket or is there some miracle stuff in a tube?

thanks

X2 on The Right Stuff(mostly because it's fast) You can get smaller quantities at Ctire

Amazing. I didn't know they made smaller portions now. Years ago you used to only be able to get the half caulking tube of it, and I never used enough of it before the tube went bad.

Looking up the Ultra black that Ryan posted, it looks better than the right stuff for oil resistance though. A little cheaper too.

Thanks for the ideas, going to pick up some Right Stuff to have but feeling less lazy today so go with the factory arrangement which is three layers or cork, either size of the glass and one between bezel and machine casting. The RTV said surfaces should be oil free. maybe it is more tolerant than that, but its hard to get it clean and I didn't want the same issues

Restoring my 10ee it called for square cut o-rings. I just ordered a bunch from McMaster-Carr in the appropriate size. There is no groove or anything for the O-ring it is just sandwiched between the glass and housing.

What size diameter are you looking for? I have a bunch extra if you can use them. There are just shy of 1” diameter if I remember correctly. I can check the diameter if that’s in the right range for you.

Thanks Van, this also for a 10ee, '41. What year is yours? Mine had three cork gaskets, (will get some photos together). Two washer shaped pieced sandwiching the glass in the bevel recess (I'm guessing that's where your O ring goes), then a larger one under the whole bezel. The rings are OD .96 ID .625. I think I have the punches for it so shouldn't take long punch them out of 1/16 cork. I think the stack of the two washers + glass must be just a bit proud of the back of the bevel, will work with 1/16" thick washers

Mine is a 1939 Sundstrand. These should be the correct ones for you then.

As you can see I have lots, I had to buy a 100pack as a minimum qty. I am in Woodstock Ontario or I can throw some in an envelope for you if you want. Just PM me.

I also found a source of replacement glass through Perrin.ca item number CR-FT20-1

One of my sight glasses was replaced with plexi that had yellowed over the years. New glass was $1.61 each when I bought them a year or so ago so I replaced them all.
