I just saw a Kijiji thread with some tools up for sale and a couple of the have me curious:

First the Starrett C-frame indicator, what is it used for? Sheet thickness?

Second, another Starrett, what is it used for?

Nice Moore & Wright level.....

The second Starrett box is a back button indicator set. I have the full kit and it's a very handy bit of kit.

Oh, interesting.

What kinds of things would you use it for? What is the arm with the balls on each end used for? A relay lever?

Yes. Basically a motion transfer system.

I use a kit like that to check bedding stress. You mount the gauge on one part and the back lever touching the other. Then tighten and loosen the screws. Any movement indicates stress. Very useful.

It is essentially a relative motion indicator system.

Exactly. For indicating inside a part.
I use mine for tramming as the dial faces up making it easy to read :)
I think it is possibly the most versatile indicator out there.

Sounds like a good tool for what both you & @Susquatch use it for. I like the inside indicating angle, pretty cool.

And the other shoe drops, the ad is GONE! It only went up today and the location is kind of off the beaten path although a nice place to visit (Cabot Trail and all....)

So, in the box was a combination set (probably Starrett), 1 & 2" mics, a depth mic, the big M & W level, some taps, dies & drills, several dividers/calipers, tap handles etc. etc. in a Beach machinists box, all for $250. The vintage all look about like what I inherited from my father so good, old school tools. I was weighing the 3 hour drive....

Maybe one of our members will get the Myford.

Quick QC checking thickness of any sheets material

As discussed by others, the 196 indicator is handy; I have an older set in a wooden box. The indicator itself is an integral part of other Starrett instruments, such as the 192 Vibrometer.

From where I am, if you don't want to drive 3 hours you aren't going to have much.....

I feel your pain

I am indeed quite fortunate to have Windsor an hour West and London an hour East.

Toronto is 3 hours but it might as well be 60. I don't like going there. You know it's bad when many of the folks who live there don't like going there either!

Oh, you misunderstood, I don’t get out much but for that I was already making a plan! ;)

If I am interested, I am starting the truck while the wife is getting the directions and confirming availability...... I'm fortunate in that my wife enjoys a spontaneous road trip as much as I do. A nice lunch out in a new location makes for a good day all round. ;)
When she spotted the $50.00 South Bend we were on the road in well under the hour:cool:

Kamloops is our nearest "center" and the selection is pretty sparce at 2 hrs away. Vancouver is 3 1/2 hrs away and the selection isn't much better, there's just more people to compete with.....
