Wanted...... Lifting Magnet.

Hey everyone. As we’re all cleaning up our shops I am sure many of you (like me) are finding a number of “goodies” hidden in the dark spaces. By any chance does anyone happen to have a lifting magnet? I looked on Amazon and they have for $160 one that’ll lift 660 lbs, which should cover most if the stuff in my shop that needs to be moved, with a 50% safety factor, lol. If you have something similar, and you are interested in parting with it...... or if you have something similar and want to offer feedback as to wether 660lb/300kg is good or bad, I’m all ears.

Cheers lads!

I had that version and sold it in favor of the next size up (1320 lbs). It worked, but I needed more 'oomph' to move my welding table around with my gantry. I found the 660' version a little 'unnerving'. But..... the form factor and weight (<20lbs) was GREAT!. The bigger one is heavier but gives me a better sense of comfort.

I don't use it that often, but my advice is to 'respect' it. The lifting power is best when the thickness of the metal you are attaching to is 3/4" or better. Using a huge magnet on 1/4 plate instance may not hold any better than a smaller one. Also beware of the type of alloy. The rustier the mystery metal, the better. The documentation (if any) will show a sliding scale for % of lift by metal thickness.

I also have the big monster (4000lbs version). it is almost unusable in that it weighs ~300lbs on its own. But man does that magnet work great. I can pickup 8-10' pieces of 1/2" wall 4x4 pipe 2 or 3 at a time. It makes the veins in my legs feel funny when it's 'on'.

I wouldn't swing a tool that I love from one of these 3 feet in the air if you know what I mean.

My best use case is moving pieces outside with the small tractor. drive up, drop the magnet, turn it on, move the metal. The next use case is lifting 4x8 sheets of 3/8 or 1/2 plate with the gantry onto the table for plasma cutting, sweeeeeeeeeet.

I usually sling loads with either a choker or chain, but for plate lifting, there's no better than a good magnet. It has come i really handy a few times.

Kevins's 4000lb magnet is awesome to behold! What a brute of a lifter....

I ended up with the small 220lb magnet. For moving things around the shop it is perfect. My rotary table (75lbs) and moving it around has become significantly easier with the magnet and crane. Just closing the loop everyone. I can attest that the PML 100 (100KG/220LB) is worth every penny of the $100 CAD.

Cheers.
