Vipers Venom Cutting Oil

My goto cutting oil is Vipers Venom for precision work.

Vipers Venom is a thick clingy fluid that doesn't fling off easily and lasts several passes. Tap Magic thick is similar so I'm trying it as a replacement for the Venom.

I also use Rapid Tap
- Heavy Duty for steel
- Tap Magic Aluminium
- Hot Max for Stainless
- Extreme Xtra Thick for hard steel

& WD40 for most aluminium work.

The problem with vipers venom is sourcing it. It used to be available in Canada from "The Reamer Guy" in BC. But he doesn't carry it any more for some reason.

It is available at Grizzly but they won't ship to Canada. Something about dangerous goods.

So I'm on the hunt for a replacement.

This is the best stuff I've ever used for machining ferrous metals. But Canadian supply has disappeared. If anyone ever finds a Canadian supplier I'd love to know about it.

Grizzly sells it in bulk volumes as well as bottles.

Buying a 5gallon pail, and redistributing it in smaller quantities seems like a good little winter side project for a semi retired farmer in the off season.......

:D

I'd do that in a heart beat if I could get the 5 gal pail. But I can't get it across the border. This whole discussion would be over if I could.

Well, my own UPS Adventure turned out well!

I ordered 1 quart of Vipers Venom from Grizzly. I fully expected that my order would get rejected. Instead I got a shipping date and a tracking number with UPS.

A week ago or so, I got an invoice for shipping, handling, and customs. I paid that electronically.

Today, this arrived - undamaged and sitting right side up.

On the strength of how well this trip went, I'll order a 5 gallon pail as soon as Grizzly has stock. Then I'll make some available to members who want some.

For anyone who might be interested, venom is a high sulphur cutting oil for ferrous materials. What makes it special is its stickiness and slinging qualities. You put a drop on the work, and it spreads out and sticks to the steel. One drop is good for 2 or 3 passes. It's great stuff, best I've ever used.

Not sure what you paid but viperbenchrest.com shows $25/qt and $265/5 gallon. US I guess plus shipping. Site suggests it's in stock. Just sayin.

I know. But I also know he will not ship to Canada. Too much headache.

Although I have known him to bring some along for himself when he visits and then accidentally leave some behind... .

Kind of ironic that his shop is just across the river. I've been invited to visit but the opportunity has never come up.

Policy change ?

Update - it turns out that Grizzly is the cheaper option after all. Grizzly shipping is $50US by UPS plus a 10% Discount right now and they have stock again now. Direct from Viper is $150 by UPS and it was their best option. I confirmed that.

Either way, it is now off the table as Canada has just imposed a 25% tarrif on it. I'll wait till the smoke clears before I do this.

I decided to order a 5 gal pail and take the tarriff risk anyway.

Grizzly cost was 320 + 50 shipping and I got a $16 discount. So USD 354 from Grizzly.

I'll provide another update when I know what the taxes, tarriffs, and UPS fees are.

It has landed. I now have a 5 gal jug of Viper's Venom in stock.

Total delivered cost was:
Original purchase $319.99 US plus $50US shipping is $369.99US. The charge on my credit card was $522.63 Cdn

As expected, there were also UPS Charges including duty and taxes and brokerage fees

Taxes & Duty - $59.68
Brokerage Fees - 47.63

All in, my cost was 629.94 say $630 Cdn in round numbers. In portions, that turns out to be:

Qt Units Cost
5 Gal US 630
1 Gal US. 126
1 3.78L Jug 126
1 Qrt US 31.50
1 Litre 33.21
5 Litre Jug 166

The three most convenient packaging containers are used Engine Oil Jugs which are typically 5 Litre Jugs, 3.68 L windshield washer jugs, and 1L Oil Bottles.

CWret wants a US gallon so I'll bring him that at the meetup at the end of April.

I can supply other quantities too. But based on my current usage rate, 1 US Gallon will last me the rest of my life. That means that 3 US Gallons are up for grabs. Yes, you can ask for smaller volumes. PM me if you want some of it and we can work out a suitable delivery. All shipping risks will be on the buyer even if it doesn't arrive.

I'll get another 5 gal pail if the demand warrants it.

I'll post the above in the buying and selling subforum.
