Use of micarta

I was in Princess Auto today and they had micarta slabs on sale and bought a chunk as I have recently watched a video where they used some in a metal/machining related way. The problem is I'll be damned if I can remember what it was used for. I'm a bit embarrassed but I know I was thinking when I saw that video " hmmnn I could make that if I had some micarta"
I know that's not much detail but has anyone watched a video recently that might be "the one"? If I ever get back to making knives, I guess I can use it for handles if I can't figure out what the heck I bought it for! LOL.

PA lists it as "Forging Handle Material - Ideal for making handles for tools such as knives". The website doesn't list slabs for sale, unless you consider 12X5X1/4 a slab?

Micarta can be used for setup jigs when your hold down bolts go down into something solid, like steel or aluminum. It is a lot easier to custom fit a complex curved part than say, aluminum.

Lots of uses but handles & jigs seem to be the predominant hobbyist application. Its a sandwich of high end resins & (depends) linen or other fibers. Some people even make their own by squishing things like burlap or types of papers with resin for certain cosmetic or texture appearance. I think its an electric insulator & mostly waterproof. Good wear resistance. G10 is similar but its glass or other such composite fibers.

I'm not sure about todays version of micarta, but the older stuff used in the aviation world can be a health hazard. Dust is a carcinogen. Becareful.

That's ringing a bell...I believe the video I watched had something to do with holding something down in a milling vice maybe.
Anyways I've always liked the stuff for knife handles ànd now I've got some again.
