Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. Thread measuring triangles vs. Wire method for pitch diameter

Anyone use thread measuring triangles? My father taught me to use the three wire method, but I also have a set of triangles. I have never used them. I guess it is what ever you get used to.

The (considerable imo) advantage of the wires is that you can measure any form of thread.

There’s an old thread on the HSM Forum:

I read the HSM thread. It's hard for me to get my head around the idea that wires or triangles or thread mics shouldn't be used on threads cut with HSS tools. According to them, you need the precision of carbide for such tools to work???? That's a pile of donkey doo.

For one thing, I don't use wires, triangles, or mics all that much on existing threads. I use them mostly on threads while I am cutting them to determine progress toward the goal. And FWIW, I don't even do that much any more. I pretty much just make my threads by the lathe dials. In recent years that always seems to work out perfect for me.

That said, I could see using them on existing threads that have a problem. This could help determine what is wrong.

My favorite tool is thread mics. Accusize makes a decent set.

Here is a photo of the triangles.
