Tecnico's Latest Kijiji Finds

I had been thinking that I needed more hold down clamps and last weekend I was perusing Kijiji when some machine shop related goodies turned up about an hour from here. When I got there I found this:

No missing pieces and a real metal rack!

And this:

I’ve never seen a protractor on a 24” scale but there it is. The scale is marked Starrett #4 but nothing on the protractor but it’s interesting because the base is about twice as wide as the typical one you see on a 12” scale so maybe it’s a matched set.

It’s well made, maybe it’s Starrett but maybe it’s mix & match because the scale nut isn’t the typical Starrett shape, maybe Brown & Sharpe, Goodell Pratt or Union Tool? Interestingly the level vial housing is formed sheet metal, not cast. Anybody recognize it?

The other items of the “set” are obscure too, one rule is marked TWIX and the other name isn’t readable but it's metric/inch so probably Canadian? That’s fine, I can use the scale on the double square I just finished re-vialing.

The fly cutters will complement the other set I have but I don’t know what I’ll do with all the ½” square nut wrenches, LOL! Anyone need some? Maybe trade me for a comparable 11/16 hex wrench for my Standard Modern?

I have no need (now) for Morse taper wedges either but they came with the deal. And a lantern rocker to top it off, good since neither of mine came with one, LOL!

The J & S Tool Co. Inc. fixture clamps are an interesting bonus, I’ve never seen anything like them:

The last thing looks sort of like a quick change insert holder, they’re marked J. E. Wood W-504 and W-505 but nothing comes up in Google.

Any ideas? Maybe a brake lathe accessory?

All in all, a nice drive in the country on a bright spring day and a nice haul of tooling.:)

Really? Your lathe tailstock isn't a Morse Taper?

Either way, you are right. Sooner or later you will need them. Shine them up and put them away till needed.

With my kind of luck, if you put them away out of sight, you will end up forgetting you have them and buy more too...... Piling stuff on surfaces is a much better strategy.

Both lathe tail stocks are Morse but the inserts are released by backing the quill into the tailstock.

I’ve only seen the release slots in drill press quills.

Just checked, I do have an R8/MT3 adapter that I’ve never used. I don’t have any MT3 drill bits though.

I’ll file the wedges away with the adapter, if I can find one the other will be with it, LOL! I don’t have room to start any more piling so I’ll have to file. ;)

Doesn't always work. Usually only MT3 tapers with tangs work that way. Not all MT3 tapers have tangs.

Also, if you do any pressure work, you might find that using the quill handle to release the taper is too hard on it. The wedge works MUCH better.

Extend your tailstock completely, then look to see if you have the wedge slots. If so, your tailstock is designed to use both methods as required. And see....... just like that you need one of those wedges already!

Neither my MT2 Myford or my MT3 Standard Modern have the slots so they have to release via the screw. Not everything I have has a tang either.

Maybe it’s a more modern practise or maybe a far east thing?

Yes, in layers..... You want it to be like an archeological dig, only without the carbon dating. :p

Ok, there are some things like that but mostly I have to cop to a hybrid system of piles and random entry files, like my tool boxes & storage shelves. Nothing ever on the floor though, the risk of a water spill is never zero.
