Surface plate resurfacing/reconditioning/certification event SW Ontario Region

A couple of recent comments made me want to reinvestigate the availability of granite surface plate resurfacing services in Ontario. Especially if I will be buying 2 more 24x36 plates cheap that need work.

In consulting my archives I see that there were at least 3 companies in Michigan who do work in the SW Ontario region, with some coming as far as Toronto. There is also one in Montreal who does resurfacing and travels to Toronto. I never found a company in the GTHA that provides this service, but I'm still looking and may find one yet.

If it proves that a specialist has to be brought into the area to provide resurfacing services then this will likely prevent most hobbyists seeking professional resurfacing services, but if enough people need resurfacing services we may be able to host an event and split the travel and accommodation cost of the provider.

Anticipating that a specialist would need to be brought into the area, and in order to lower the costs of the services I thought it may be beneficial to host a surface plate resurfacing event. We could also have the provider demonstrate the resurfacing process and video record the process as a learning aide for people wishing to gain such knowledge for themselves first hand. We may also be able to arrange for hands on lessons with an additional payment if there is sufficient interest.

The logistics of hosting such an event will take some time, so I propose that one be held in the spring or early summer of 2025. It could potentially be held in conjunction with an Ontario spring meet up.

Please leave a comment here if you're interested in any of the following:

having a surface plate (or more) resurfaced, and or

buying an inexpensive used 24x36 plate to have resurfaced, and or

hands on surface plate resurfacing lessons, and or

If you have a climate controlled shop large enough to host an event, and or

You are willing to help your fellow members organize, transport plates or any other assistance.

Large plates need to be brought sufficiently ahead of time to acclimate to the conditions prior to being resurfaced and calibrated.

The costs are yet undetermined and will be based on location, and the number of participants having plates resurfaced/calibrated

Typical USD costs without any travel costs for the Resurfacing and Calibration of a 24x36 is roughly $200.00 if the plate has normal wear.

If the plate is extremely worn (out past 0.0005), then the price would be $400.00. This is due to extra labour and time to required to resurface the plate.

Travel and set up costs to host event in Toronto are around $600USD so the more attendees the lower this portion of the cost is for each.

The guys in Vancouver used to come to Calgary to re-certify surface plates, until their autocoluumnator got badly damaged by an airline.

Now they require you to ship the plate or DMM to them and pay for shipping back, plus certification services. So shops just buy a new plate when the old one is suspect or out of certification timeline (3 or 5 years depending on the cert).

...what a waste.

Plates are sure cheap down here in Wisconsin . Probably worth is to get them fixed .

Not sure if the Montreal company is the same people, as we used when I worked in Peterborough or not. We had two guys from Montreal that would come do it, they travelled together in a car, and would spend a few days in town doing all of our plates.

If it’s the same folks, I had the impression they were good to deal with, maybe reach out, and see if they know they are in the area for other clients, it may be possible to get added into their schedule.

Mine? Well, it was last done likely 15 years ago, and for what I do, more than good enough.
