Hi guys I can’t seem to get the power feeds to work on my lathe. I moved the selector switch and it does nothing. I’ve read that once it’s in position, turn on the lathe and I should be able to turn the knob to engage the power feed. It does nothing in the up middle down position. Any idea what is wrong. I did remove the lead screw to move the lathe in to the basement. I can provide pictures if that will help.

Is the lead screw installed now and functioning?

What does "up middle down" mean?

The lead screw is reinstalled and works with the split nut as usual. The selector by the split nut handle has 3 positions, up I think is bed feed, centre neutral, down is the cross slide feed. None of those positions work.

Ok, that sounds right now. If that selector is not in the middle you won't be able to engage the half not. (that stumped me once).

When you engage the clutch (clockwise) does it lock up (about half a turn)?

No, but I have no idea if it worked before I got the lathe. According to the guys I got it from they could not remember the last time it was used. I as looking at it there’s a nut in the center should I remove or loosen that?

Try tightening it (just a guess)...

Ok I will play with it tomorrow. I have the sm 9 inch manual only shows the parts listed and not a view of the parts together. If I can’t get it to work I might pull the apron apart to see if there is damage to the gears. I have started working on my little Webster project and this is par for the course for me spending more time getting the machine to work.

The clutch is made up of several plates. If you have it apart they need to be stacked properly. Like plates 12 and 13 alternating. The spring provides release tension. As @YYCHM suggests you should be able to tighten the nut to increase the clutch slip.

How sensitive would you say, like tighten it a 1/4 turn? Can I tighten the nut in the centre while the lathe is running?

I have a spare clutch assembly if you need it.
I might have to take you up on that. I can imagine that the drive could be damaged by running in to the chuck?

Sitting here thinking. When I put the lead screw in I lined up the shaft and the key inside the apron. Is it possible I did something then. The lead screw went in pretty smoothly. I did not have to force anything.

What follows is from memory from having the apron apart so if I'm wrong someone please holler.

Can the tumbler handle be moved up/down passed the selector holes? This will tell if the key locking the handle to the tumbler (26) is in place.

@YYCHM, can I get you to verify this next step. With the tumbler handle in the up/down position and the clutch engaged can you move the carriage using the hand wheel? You shouldn't be able to move the carriage. This should tell you if the worm gear (17) is locking to the lead screw and the clutch is engaging.

You shouldn't need to go cromag when tightening the clutch, it didn't take much on mine for it to engage.

You also should not be able to engage the 1/2 nuts and travel at the same time. There is a lockout system to prevent this from happening.

If you need to take the apron apart I have pics of the clutch assy showing the order of the plates.
