SM 1022 Utilathe - feed clutch control?

The manual has no description of how this control is supposed to work, can someone enlighten me please. It feels(sort of like) it has three positions, and in the middle position it engages, seems odd. The control on mine looks different, not a double tang like the image, more like the black knob half nut lever.

On mine its on or off, the idea is that the clutch will engage when there is excessive pressure, on mine you will hear a click an it won't feed anymore until you disengage and re engage.
My understanding it protects against crashes I have never had to set up mine but maybe others have. When you engage the half nut there is no clutch action and it will crash if you run it into something. Its a nice feature good to know if things go sideways it protects the feed components and gears, it doesn't happen often but when it does it can save you grief.

Am I correct to assume that this is the control you use to activate / deactivate either Z (longitudinal carriage travel), or X (cross feed) travel?

Assuming that's correct, does your control engage travel in the middle position?

Yes mine z is pushed in and out is the x crossfeed and the middle is for easier hand turning no engagement of travel.
I'm not sure, but what your describing sounds like the feed selection plunger (see image above).

From the manual...

After setting the Feed Selection Plunger the power should be clutched in by the Feed Clutch Handle located on the front lower right corner of the apron.
Do not use Feed Selection Plunger for clutching in.

So back to the "Feed Clutch Handle", mine feels like it has three positions, when in the center position I can "clutch in" Z axis travel, however in either of the outer positions no engagement. Is that how yours works?
