  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Here's a link to a PDF catalog of Smith & Mills shapers, has some extra info. If this is a 20" as the cover seems to indicate, then according to the chart on page 9 of the catalog it weights between 4450 & 5400 lbs.

No, it's just that as green as I am to this field, I knew damn well that shaper wasn't 200 years old. Industrial lathes are barely older than that.

As far as wanting her, if it was, say, 8-12" or so, I'd be interested. At 20" & 4500 lbs? Nope. You, on the other hand, need to increase your collection.
 
A pretty classic case of, 'when the size goes up past a point, the price comes down, a lot'.

It works out well for the fellas ('cause really, how many women would spare it a passing glance?) that have both the space and the means to move such iron. Too old to fit in a commercial shop, too big for all but few of the hobby guys.

Maybe, but not everyone lives continually on their communications devices. Sometimes people take days to get back to you - working, long weekend, whatever.

Looks like a great project for somebody (else)!
